The key is that I don't look at Maggie when I'm walking over to get her. If you look at something or someone else, they'll try and see where you're looking instead of playing the "catch me" game. I also use the turn and walk the other way method sometimes. Yesterday I called twice and she wouldn't come but stood there giving me that "definant" look, and I just said "F** YOU!" and walked away. I took about 3 steps and there she was at my side. (Hey we're New Yorkers; we cuss like sailors around here.)

Cassie is 7 mths and not very good at coming back to me outside, although we have now started training classes and hopefully they will work. What I do now is , because she is very good at sit and stay ,if she won't come to me I shout Cassie sit ...stay..them come cassie... a bit of a roundabout way but hey!!if it works don't knock it.Cassie dosen't know she's being conned.

Glad I am not the only one but Charlie is much older than all of your babies !!!!!

when he was about a year old he was wonderful always came back but then he hit about 18mths and that was it off he went - never too far but never close enough !!!

I totally agree with what 'Agent Scully' said about letting him off his lead too early I really think this is what happend with Charlie - but it was so hard to keep on his leash !!!!

so we have gone right back to basics with him and it seems to be working -

I have also started to take him to his favorite park every morning instead of the one right outside our front door ! it means I have to get up earlier but I don't mind Charlie is getting a much better run and enjoys it more and that seems to be working - I am so tired though - we are also starting Agility tomorrow can't wait.

I have also started to say 'here' instead of 'come' and that seems to be working too

So I will keep you all up to date with Charlie

Trixie is excellent with COME as long as we're at the house. She's also very good at it in the park until she somehow senses "this is the one that makes me go home." It's like she can read my mind and knows if she comes this one last time her play time is over.

One thing that works pretty well is having her chase me. I've also taken to something I read in a book which is leaving the lead attached to her when she's "free." The lead slows her down when running a little bit because it gets in the way, but when I get to that 2 ft. radius and she BOLTS, I can just step on the lead and she's mine. And... I WIN.

Like I said, though, she's really good with treats or praise at home, and pretty good at the park until she SENSES "this is the one." I'm sure I'm giving it away with my body language somehow, but I still haven't figured out what the giveaway clue is. She's a smartie though.

We start school on Mar. 1... I can't wait to have that support.

I went through basic obediance with mine at 2 yrs old. What the trainer had me do was have Devo on the 6 ft leash, put him in sit, back up and say OK, Devo come and praise praise praise when he got to me, even letting him knock me over if he was that excited. After this became effective, we moved up to a 50 ft rope attached to his leash and continued the process. In the house, I would use this rope in the house. Put him in sit in one room and have him come to me in another room where he didn't see me. If he didn't come, I was to take him by the leash and bring him to where I had been standing and calling him. I had to introduce distractions (like his sister Minnie, or someone else playing around and get him to focus on me and me alone.) After you feel comfortable at home doing this, practice in the park with a long tie such as this and you should find success! Good luck!
