Just wondering what you all have experienced after neutering or spaying your babies... Tyson goes in a couple months to get "fixed", and I'm just wondering if this will calm him down a few notches. I've heard people say that before - but don't know if it's really true...

What has your experience been? I'm hoping it's true! beericon

If you are asking if neutering will decrease his activity level, desire to play, desire to bounce of the walls, etc... probably not.

I have'nt noticed any difference in Spencer's activity level since being fixed, other than the first couple of days after we brought him home.He is still as boisterous as he ever was.foolicon

The same goes for Ruby, nothing changed but, I personally feel that he listens better. He got neutered when he was a year and a half and he's still hyper but, I found a solution to that, get a second dog. We just got our second boxer and they're truly keeping each other busy that they don't have time to be bother with you or to destroy things. :p I think compare to Lily (she's 7 months) Ruby get tired out faster. Now I just have to get her spay.

Neutering will not change your dogs personality. If he is very active he will remain so. Training can help control a dog not neutering.

Neutering can help with some "issues" like the desire to run away if a female in heat is nearby, male agression with other males or mounting.

When I am Bru fixed I asked my trainer if it would help his domiance issues. He explained the neutering won't change Bru now but may prevent other bad behaviors from forming.

The only thing that has worked to calm Bru some is age :)

I had asked the same question, and was told that boxer's don't really 'settle down' until 3-4 years old. Lusi is just as hyper and funny now as she was before she was spayed.

In my experience with getting my male dogs neutered it never really "calmed them down" but it will help with their desire to run away and find a girlfriend;) it has calmed some dogs to calm down though I guess it kinda depends on the dog!

Avra after spaying is more mellow :D and more hungry dog:(
Before spaying i couldn't train her with treats,at any time that she would see another dog she would become deaf at once....
Now she obeys and attends me very well:)

thanks

I guess each boxer is different and responds differently to training or getting "fixed". All of our non-boxer dogs that we've had in the past (llahso apso, chihuahua, golden retriever) have all calmed down considerably after being fixed.

Ty started training last week and along with his getting neutered in a couple months, I'm looking forward to a calmer doggie :)

Thanks for all your input.

Since last week, Oliver has been a different dog in terms of aggression towards other dogs. We have a couple of theories, including the possibility that he made a deal with the devil while callapsed due to a panic attack, and we wonder if perhaps he's finally realized that he has no testicles! He was neutered on Jan 14 and his behaviour changed abrubtly as of Feb 22. We're back at the dog parks!
