Heimlich Manuver on Boxers??

The reason I ask is Last night, Otis was choking and couldn't get anything out. I was just about to panic when out came some kibble. I was actually straddling him and pressing up from his stomach area (just under the ribs). He also threw up a little. My skin DS (almost 12 yo) had the phone in hand, ready to dial and talk to his Dad.

This really had me scared as I wasn't sure what to do.

Does anyone know where I can get info on how to help them when they were choking?

Otis is fine...stopped eating for a couple of hours...wouldn't even take any water. He just went to his bed and vegged a bit. I just kept an eye on him to make sure he didn't have any ill affects.

I hope I did the right thing.

You did the right thing. Medium to large dogs need the heimlich from behind method and small dogs you lay on their sides and press their ribs. Hope he is doing fine. Take a look at this link:

I kind of knew the Heimlich Manuver from books and posters but have never actually had to apply it to a human much less a dog. I just applied what I knew to Otis's body.

I also sent this link to all my friends and family that have dogs and/or cats.

Yes, you can. You can also give rescue breathing & CPR. Hopefully you'll never need to. Glad your baby is OK.

Poor Otis, it must have scared the poor guy half to death. Glad to hear all is well though. I think I'd be like you, willing to try just about anything at that point. Rather than just stand there looking at them, knowing it's not getting any better. Glad to hear that all turned out well though!! appicon

Thanks Everyone! Otis is definitely much better...then Daddy brought him to the vet's this morning for a check up and his Rabies shot. Poor thing never even knew what pricked him!

Vet says he's a perfect specimen!!! But then we always knew that!

Thanks for the link on the first aid. I'm going to check it out. I did search on Heimlich Manuver but nothing came up. So, I posted. I couldn't wait until Otis's vet visit this morning! Sometimes, you just never know what's next with these guys!
