My husband and I love to hike. Since getting out boxer though, it's not something we can really do anymore unless it's during the weekend while she's at daycare. I'm not comfortable taking her on trails with us just yet, as she is easily distracted. I wouldn't want to be out in the middle of the woods when she has "freak out" session on the leash.
Unfortunately, this all means that we're getting chubby again with out the hiking! We originally wanted a higher energy dog so we could be active WITH our dog. Unfortunately, we spend all of our time making sure she gets enough exercise, while we get hardly any. We have worked with her consistently for 6 weeks on nice leash walking, and finally got her to the point that we can actually get through a walk without her going nuts. But then I tried practice jogging in the backyard with her on the leash, and she immediately thought it was a tug of war game. She bit the leash, jumped, cut me off, tripped me, etc. It was all in play, but we got nowhere.
I know lots of people run with their boxers. I also know boxers are prone to leash reactivity. We have an active dog, and we want to get back to being active people. As it is now, we take her to run off her energy on the farm after work, and then we have to try and squeeze in our own work out time without her, and it's nearly impossible. I just wish we could all work out together! Is there any other kind of training beside basic leash training that helps with jogging? Or should we just keep it up with the training we've been doing and hope that eventually it applies to running?
