Do you water in the crate???

I don't leave water in my older dogs crates, because they are usually only in there for less than six hours.
But, with puppies, I love using rabbit bottles. They hang on the outside of the pen or crate and are very easily used. The dogs learn to use them fast and you don't have to worry about them stepping in or spilling.
You can get them at any feed store or pet shop.

The smaller size is fine. Dallas really likes it -- he'll go drink out of it even when he's not in his crate. I like this because he can't tip it over.

I put water in the crates though neither Hammer nor Ginger seem to drink a lot of it. Right now I use non-skid plastic bowls. They have rubber on the bottoms so they can't easily be scooted or moved about. I keep meaning to order one of the hanging bottles, but I haven't got around to it yet.

I'll admit that I don't provide water (to dogs in crates) at all. My foster dogs are crated for two stretches of about four hours, and they seem to do fine with no water. Giving them water just means they'll have to pee that much sooner!
One of my foster dogs, Arlo, is sort of obsessive about water. We ran a zillion tests and there is nothing physically wrong with him, but he will drink water just because it is there. So I really have to watch his intake.

Buster has a water bottle in his crate - he's in there for up to 4 hours at a stretch and with all the chew toys, I know his mouth must get dry...:rolleyes:
He really seems to like it - he'll go into his crate for water rather than drink out of the common dog water bowl. I wonder if his sister Maggie takes that as a personal insult...

This is very interesting. I don't give my dogs any water in their crates either and they do fine. But I do feed raw which has a higher moisture content than kibble and they have moist bones to chew in their crates. Their water intake overall is lower on the raw diet. I'm glad to hear I am not the only one that doesn't provide water ad libidum in the crate.

I started providing water in the crates when it was suggested to me, maybe here because Tulley would gulp water once he was out of the crate. One crate has a bowl that is fastened to the side of the crate. That was expensive in a local pet store. Then, I borrowed the rabbit feeder style for a foster. They all went into that crate for water. Since it is so popular, I have since bought my own. I buy from carealotpets on the internet. It was cheap, around $5.
(-: They really enjoy licking so maybe that is why they like to lick for their water! Hee hee.

Scruffy has a water bottle and it seems to be working out just fine. Although, I do have to watch how much I put in there. If it is completely full, he'll drink it all just because it's there. That leaves me with a mess to clean up and a puppy that needs a bath. Needless to say, I learned this the hard way!
