We used to let Chopper on the couch when he was little, but we got new furniture and he was getting bigger so we don't let him up there any more (he still gets up when we're not looking) But we mainly did it because not everyone who comes over is a dog lover (I know....it's hard to believe) and he's too big to be in their laps.
But he does allow us to sleep on his king size bed with him :)

Since I don't mind and it has never been an issue, this is what I do. In order to keep the furniture clean, I bought surefit covers and put beach towels on top of them. I love to see them curl up. It's like it's theirs and not mine anymore. When people come over and they don't move out of the way, I have had negative comments, but after all, it's their house and not the people that come over. They can do what they want at their house. If you don't like animals, DON'T COME OVER, cause you are at the wrong house. I also never put them outside for company. The same saying goes for that to. I would not put my kids outside, why would I put them outside.LOL!!!!!

HA! You own a Boxer, right? Have you seen many pics on this site where the dog is not on the couch or chair? I say live with it....they love to be part of the family.:)

We do turf them off though if they're taking up too much room, Zeb's the worst he sprawls right out, legs all over the place

I have put furry material on the sofa and the pets know they can sit on that furry surface. They prefer it and I prefer them to be on it.

It's the best of both worlds.

(however, if they move off of the furry material onto the sofa, I don't freak out. It's just part of being a pet owner.)

hmmm I guess just look at the pic next to my name. Mercedes is allowed on my livingroom couches (they're 6 year old couches and have stain guard) but she doesn't go in the formal sitting room couches (I'm not sure what to call the room, but it's the one I'm not allowed to sit on the furniture either). Tell you the truth I break the rules more than she does. In fact she stays out of the room completely most of the time.

Vote Yes here!

I don't think there is any harm in letting them sit on the couch. In my opinion, they need to be told that they can before they do. In addition to making sure that they still use their crate.

I am glad mine wants to sit on the couch with me because sometimes I have to get her out of her crate to sit with me on the couch.

With my boxer, Balboa, and my other two, there is no room on the couch for anybody else. They all stretch out as far as they can so they make sure they get their share of the room.
