If you're talking about competition, it depends on the organization. For AKC agility, you either need an AKC registration or an ILP number. For USDAA or NADAC, the dog must be registered with the organization (you don't need "papers", mixed breeds can compete - this is an event registration, not a pedigree registration).

Registration is generally not required for classes. :)

An ILP is fairly easy to obtain and you can get info on the AKC website. You basically need to send a picture to the AKC along with the app. In order to be ILP'd the dog must be spayed or neutered.

UKC also allows mixed breeds and ILPs. I have AKC papers on my dogs but compete in UKC as well so they have ILPs in the UKC.

Since you're in Ontario, I'll add on some specific Canadian info :).

There are 2 agility venues that are popular in Canada now. AAC (www.aac.ca) and NADAC (www.nadac.com). Both allow any dog (purebred or mixed) to compete. You do need to register with the association before entering a trial, but I wouldn't worry about that until she's older and ready to trial. They can't compete until they are ar least 18 months. She shouldn't start training for agility until at least a year, but start working on your obedience ASAP :)

You should PM Kysha and ask some advice on training locations. She's in your area and does agility. I think she's getting a puppy soon too!

I know that this is a little after the fact... but Channan is correct. The AAC is the most dominant organization that you will find here in the Ottawa area at least. There are more and more NADAC trials - I personally have yet to compete in one...

There are CKC agility trials too, but your puppy would have to be registered through CKC to trial there (obviously :))

Channan is also correct about the puppy - I did get a puppy! She came home about a month ago, and her name is Payton. Owen LOVES her and so far everyone is getting along great.

Payton is 16 weeks old and has already been to the agility field! She has started puppy building block - the MOST beginner version of agility you can imagine. We are focusing 100% on ground work (no jumping, not a-frame, no daog walk, and certianly no weaves). So far she is doing great - I forgot how short a puppies attention span is :)
