When I woke up yesterday morning I felt the beginnings of a cold coming on. No big deal, really. More of an annoyance than actually being sick. Mabel isn't one to let me out of her sight anyway, but yesterday she was RIGHT THERE all day. She wasn't in the way or anything, but she was never more than a few steps away from me. I thought it was weird, but hey, she's a Boxer puppy. She's a big goof (lovable smushy face goof!) on a good day. :)

This morning I woke up with what I'm sure is the flu. I have a decent fever running and I feel awful. My husband let Mabel out of her crate when he woke up. She went outside like she does every morning, but then instead of going to the food cabinet to wait for breakfast, she bolted up the stairs and into my bedroom. She's lying on top of me and won't budge. My husband bribed her with her buffalo bone, which she normally goes crazy for, and she didn't even pick up her head. She just gave him that "Are you insane?" look she gets when we want her to do something she doesn't want to do.

Every few minutes she'll sniff my face and whimper. I've gotten more slobbery kisses this morning than she's given me in a month. And she will NOT move. I swear she's worried about me. Does anybody else's dog act like this when they're sick?

I think they know. They can tell when I am feeling sad. And Daddy the other night came home pretty tipsy.....ok he was drunker than a skunk. Usually they don't beg him for food but I swear to god they knew because they sat on him while he was eating and he fed them. It was funny. :)

I get migraines alot and when I have to stay home...I usually sleep in our recliner or on the couch so Dutch can run around. I'm usually engulfed in blankets because I get the chills. He'll run around for a bit but he usually ends up curling up behind my legs and under my bum and sleeps with me. He just knows I guess...He does give me a few licks and sniffs to make sure that I know he is there! It is like him taking care of me for a change...He keeps me warm! Sometimes he;ll lay his head across my face...which actually feels good! It makes the pain not so unbearable! The only problem is...his jowels make it hard to breathe sometimes...it is like putting a plastic bag over your head...if you breathe through your nose, they kind of get in the way...i fyou know what I mean!

I think they know. Charlie Paper and I went back to California this past December/January for our Christmas break, and when I got home, I got really sick with Mono. Charlie Paper had a whole houseful of other doggies to play with, but he spent most of his time curled up with me on my bed, or below me when I was on the couch. (Dogs at home aren't allowed on the couch.) My mom told me that when he did get up, he was mopey (sp?) and would constantly go into whatever room I was sleeping in, and check on me. My black lab mix did the same thing. Yeah, I think they know, and they want to make us feel better.

I totally think they know. When I had a miscarriage, Nestle did not leave my side. She wouldn't go out to go potty. I actually had to get up to get her to move. She would just lay with me and look at me occasionally and cover me in smooches.

Whenever I have been sick after that, she insists on spooning with me.

I went home from work sick on Tues, and from the time I walked into the front door, until I came to work this morning, Boomer was velcro'ed to my side. If I got up to RUN to the bathroom, he RAN with me, and when I was laying down, he laid on my legs, not on my tummy and/or chest like he normally does. It was like he knew my tummy was NOT a good place to be layin'! Even when I was feeling better yesterday evening, he would sit on my feet and every now and then, climb up and give me boxer hugs and kisses.

Aren't they great!!!lovicon

They know! My Samson is always there for me when I am down. I felt like crap yesterday and he slept with me all day. He played a little when my BF came home, but came back to sleep with me. Today, I dragged myself to work and I went home for lunch and Sammy always gets really excited when I get home and he jumps etc. Well he didn't, he just follows me where ever I go. He knows when I have my migraines and he takes very good care of me. Once I had an ice pack on my head and I was asleep but it kept falling down, I woke up a little later and Sammy's head was holding my ice pack in place. What a sweetie!

They definitely sense a different 'smell'.....When I have a cold and/or have had dental work done, Jake will practically stick his nose in my mouth and just 'sniff'. I have to reassure him mommy is ok, then he will lay down and periodically take a long 'sniff'

They know

I am certain that they know when we are sick. My wife and I have just finished a round of the flu and our Sasha has insisted on being right in the middle of everything. While I was sick and out of work for three days, she pulled her bed next to ours on my side and did not move other than bathroom breaks and to eat. Our two cocker could have cared less (I think they were annoyed with the whole thing ) but Sasha would not move. My wife came down with it right after I went back to work and Sasha immediatly took up residence on her side of the bed and again, will not move. Fortunately we are now both better, because Sasha is exhausted after "nursing" both of us back to health. We worry that she could "catch" something from us because she insist on "kissing us better". She has actually gotten a head cold from us before. You would be amazed at the looks people give you when you try to explain that your dog has a runny nose and that she got it from you!

Intuition

Dogs can pick up suttle differences in our body chemistry depending on what's happening at a given moment. We do the same. We can "smell" the pherimones (sp) of another person and know if we are attracted to them, need to avoid them, and such. Dogs do the same thing. However, I believe that dogs have a keen intuition and can sense through some higher means if we are blue, sick, injured and such. They are amazing creatures. I have seen service dogs that tell heart patients they are about to have an episode and other such diseases. Quite amazing aren't they?
