Do they know...

I was just courious....but do you think our boxers know when they meet another boxer as opposed to another breed???
Do you think they recognize their own boxer traits when they meet other dogs and this is how maybe they determine they are in the company of another boxer?? I wonder if the tail gives the other breeds away:D:

That's a good question. Maybe they know a bit better when they start playing with each other. I've never seen to dogs of different breeds play the way boxers do. I've seen Oscar try to play with other breeds and try to swat or box at them and they aren't into it, so he doesn't seem as excited as when he meets a boxer and they play the same way

Well, lots of breeds are docked, so I really doubt it's the tail. Personally, I think boxers can recognise another boxer - but because once they've met one, they know what they look like

Yes!

My baby Harry is very apprehensive around other male dogs that are bigger than him, but not other boxers. Even male boxers that are larger than him. He plays great with them and seems to know right away that they are of the same breed. It is really strange how they know that, but I think that they do. I got Harry when he was a year old and before he did not have the opportunity to socialize with other dogs, so we have been trying improve our social skills and he is doing great, but like I said he is still real apprehensive with larger dogs except boxers.

Our Boxers LOVE other Boxers and Pitbulls too. Maybe it's because any "lighter" breeds tend to get overwhelmed by 70lbs of dog jumping on them and smacking them in the head . Usually they tend to get defensive which leads to a confrontation. Boxers understand that this is playtime and don't seem to take it personally.

Prancer will stop dead in her tracks when she sees another boxer across the park, and then she breaks into a boxer burn to get over to them. Granted Prancer knows most of the boxers at our dog park, but I think she knows they are like her too.

She does not do this with the pit she like to play with, she doesn't even acknowledge the pit till it comes over, even though I know she sees her.

I agree with the other responses that they recognize other boxers. Based on the way they react when seeing a new one they have never seen before. Once they get to play they are friends for life.

I also think that puppies remember littermates. My Lucy gets excited when she sees another boxer puppy but nothing compared to the all out frenzy when she sees her sister, Libby.

I think they definately know. I even had a doggie day care owner and a vet tell me that Boxers are one of the few breeds that "know each other".

I am glad to hear this, I thought I was going luney for believeing that my boys could recognize another boxer...I swear it is show off time when they see another boxer and they dont even come close to doing this when they meet another breed, Cooper refuses to give any dog with a tail the time of day, he just will not have anything to do with them and I dont know why.
Arley doesnt really care but he just does not play the same with other breeds....he loses interest in them really quick.

Yes, they know!

My Roxy definitely knows. Most of the time, she is indifferent to other breeds. We were at the vet one day and she was laying on the floor minding her own business. The waiting room was full of other animals and she paid no attention to them. The door was across the room from her and a puppy boxer came in and Roxy was up and wigglin' as soon as she saw him. So, I know she knows! The puppy reacted the same way!
