Do They Ever Get Used To Be In The Kennel?

I am at my wits end with my dog and the kennel situation. He gets so crazy he tears up his muzzle. I have done eveything that I have been told to do. Yesterday I bought Comfort Zone. Do they ever get used to it or will this go on forever? What a nightmare.

Kona was fine after a couple of months. She would go in freely with the promise of a treat. We only put her in there when we left the house. We did video her once and she was just sitting in there without fuss.
Just keep up the routine and eventually they will adjust.

Buzz keeps freaking out with his kennel, too . . .

They are helping me out at his puppy day care with the crate but someone is with him practically all the time there. That's just not possible for me - I need to sleep some time! Actually, if I sit with him for a bit he calms down enough to just a whine or wimper before he falls asleep. Then he wakes up 2-3 hours later and you'd think the house was falling in. I know it takes patience, and we're really trying. I just have to realize he is only 10-1/2 weeks old - just a baby! My husband refuses to bring the crate into our bedroom - I really don't know if that would help anyway. He even cries when I gate him off in the kitchen for a few minutes while I get ready for work. Like I said, still just a baby. We love him to death and I can't imagine not having him!

WOW!! I just went back and read your previous posts.

I really do not have anything specific to offer but one thot did come to mind. Dogs are VERY sensitive to our emotions. They have the sixth sense thing down to an art. In the past I’ve been though some real tough situations that were VERY stressful to me and DH. The dogs could feel my emotion and it would echo back in their behavior. Like perpetual tenseness that results in “naughtiness” or separation anxiety where they would go nuts if couldn’t be with me (i.e. take care of me). Also health problems like diarrhea.

It just sounds like everything so tense in your house and within you as a person. Is there something else that could be the cause of the tension?

Actually some people have had luck with moving the crate into the bedroom at night. We never put the dogs in the crate when we are home and at night Kona slept (confined) on the floor next to our bed so if she fussed at night all I had to do is put my hand down by them for comfort and she would fall back asleep.

When I got ready for work Kona came with me until I left the house. I kept her in the bathroom with me and gated in the kitchen with me. Basically my shadow for a few months, with the help of strategically placed baby gates. :) They are infants and are looking to you for comfort. [ I would not expect a human infant left alone in a room to not fuss unless it was sleeping.]

No Kona has never hurt herself. None of our dogs have tho Cassius did break the tack welds on his cage so we had to get him a new crate. Try a crate with smaller openings

No advice for this. I don't like the idea, and what works for some doesn't always work for all. I've never crated mine. I just keep them confined to the kitchen if i'm not home or put them in the back yard if it's a nice day. They sleep in my room with me.

I don't see how this can be true given that I gave you advice on how to SLOWLY adjust your dog to the crate on Friday of last week. It's Tuesday - 4 days later. Unless you spent day and night and your dog is an exceptionally fast learner, you haven't had time to adjust him to the crate.

Please go back and reference the article I posted or do more research on crate training. It could take several weeks to get him used to the crate, especially given that he already has negative associations with it. Be patient with him.

Another thing to try is making comings and goings very non-eventful. This means don't fuss over the dog when you come home. Ignore him completely for 5-10 minutes. Don't fuss over him before you leave. Just slip out. This helps dogs with SA. Don't reward excited behavior with attention. He has to be calm before he gets any attention.

Separation anxiety is very, very frustrating and it takes a lot of patience to correct. Hang in there.

If, after you've properly crate trained, you're still having major problems, you might consider talking to your vet about medication for SA.

Hi Tesster!!!

Do not think I did not print and read the crate training article you took the trouble of sending me lightly. I did it all weekend and he was doing fine coming in and out and I even moved the kennel to a better situated place in the house. The problem is that we left him uncrated yesterday with the cleaning lady and when we got home he had trashed our family room.

My husband said no more, I hate him for it and I have to admit, our house has been trashed by Buster. So, I bought him a nice bone, put a new carpet in the crate, left classical music on and bought the plug in. My husband sanded down the edges of the kennel that he had chewed up and secured the door of the kennel even more firmly so that he couldn't push it out and get his nose stuck and hurt again. I am dreading going home today and needless to say this is begining to cause trouble in my 26 year marriage.

I have been really worried all day about Buster and if he hurt himself today, I am taking him to the vet in the morning and putting him on medication. I have to work and other than quiting my job to stay with him, I don't know what else to do. Incidently, I gave him 3 biscuits of Ultra Calm last night and 3 this morning. I hate all of this more than anyone can ever even begin to know.

Do you have a room that you can clear out and set up as a doggy proofed room? It might help.
