Do they ever calm down?

Like most boxers, Rocky is very hyper, especially when people come to visit. I've read of and tried a lot of different methods to get him to calm down but nothing has worked. I think it's mainly because we don't get visits often enough for him to remember how we want him to behave with visitors. Rocky will be a year old on 4/17/03 birthdayic , does anyone know if he will eventually grow out of this? Does anyone have any suggestions on what I could do to train him how to behave around visitors without actually having visitors regularly? Thanks for everyone's help!

Krose is the same. Still!!! He is 20 months old now! He doesn't jump on visitors or anything but for 10 minutes or so they HAVE TO pay attention to him! After that, he crawls on his bed and listens to our conversation:p He is an angel then. But the first 10 minutes have to be lived you know

My boxer boy Samson is coming up on his 8'th birthday, that's VERY hard to believe because he acts like he's still 8 months!!! :p

Yeah... and I think I read on this board that you're supposed to actually turn on the dog and totally ignore it - even feign a yawn! - to get it to realize you won't give it attn if it jumps. It also said to have guests ignore the dog upon first entering.

I'm wondering how realistic this is. If I ignore Rio, she bites my feet off until I tell her not to! Of course she's only 9 weeks old.

I find one of the best ways is to actually ignore the dog completely. You could ask your visitors to ignore the dog until it calms down and then and only then give it attention.

Boxer greetings are always hyper no matter how old but you can at least teach them not to jump up. I personally love the boxer greeting but I know some people who visit us who are not dog people find it too much and thats when I tell them to ignore the dogs - it works wonders

I know you don't think it is possible, but they do settle down at around 2 years old. Meaning, not as hyper. Ginger will be 6 years old and of course still acts like a puppy, but she is not as nearly as crazy when she was 1. Jumping on people that is another topic all together. A problem, I hear with most boxers. Our girl still gets nuts with company, but has gotten a lot better. We keep her on a leash and tell her to sit. It does take around 10 - 15 minutes to settle. I would tell you have a lot of people over, we did not when she was little and I think that did not help the problem. You have to tell your visitors to work with you. I can have Ginger in a sit position then someone makes a fuss over her and forget it.:rolleyes: Be patient, Rocky will calm down, it takes Boxers a lot longer to mature.:p Have a Happy Birthday Rocky!birthdayic

I think ignoring works best! My babies used to do this a lot, jump on people...but if you ignore them they will go away.

My hubby does it sometimes when Hook starts walking towards him for the 100th belly rub of the day He just starts snoring and closes his eyes and Hook walks away!

Hook calmed down around 3ish...Dayla is 3 and just now starting to slow down

Samantha started calming down when she was 3. She is 4 1/2 now. She still wants to jump up on people. I usually put her leash on her when someone comes over, and keep it on until she calms down.

I make Maddux sit for pats. If he gets up then he gets ignored and is put back on a sit. If he gets too spastic, he is made to sit. He would much rather be kidney beaning for the person so this has been effective. He will now sit when someone walks up to us.

I tried making Hammer sit for pats when company comes over, but he almost killed two of my close relatives so that was a bad idea. He would sit just fine until they bent to pet him, then he'd jump up and head butt them. It was awful!! :rolleyes:

Fortunately, the turn around and ignore him ploy works like a charm!! Time and patience are required.
