At a 4h of July picnic, Jackson decided to leap into the pool without warning! My husband and I were shocked as we watched him sink. It was as though he had no idea what to do. Just as I was about to jump into the water to save him, he surfaced and swam to the side. I was very proud, but also very frazzled after the ordeal! There are 2 other boxers in the family and they have shown no interest in swimming. Do boxers like to swim? And if so, what is the best way to introduce them to this?

Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

All the boxers I know like to go up to their chest in water and will not go another inch without climbing all over you. Due to there muscle mass and lack of fat they really aren't that good at floating but they can swim. Wether they like it or not is another bag of worms. To introduce Koda we took him to a local pond that people sometimes swim in and we just walked around in the water gradually getting deeper until he stopped. I highly recommend getting some kind of floatation device to help boxers float better. All the box stores, it seams like anyway, cary some kind of device if you can't find it locally there are websites such as http://www.ruffwear.com/. Good luck with introducing them to swimming.

Gibson loves to go into the water as long as he can still stand, but he will not go deep enough where he would need to rely on swimming.

Zoe sinks like a rock...she has a life vest which will keep her up should she go in past her chest, but as previously stated that would be kicking & screaming. Porter can swim with a vest but he's not very effecient at it. They do both enjoy playing in the water on a hot day.

I've had some that love it and some that just wade. I use a lifejacket in the beginning. Mine has a handle so I can go in with them and gradually get them moving in the water. Easiest one to get going was my last girl as she had a great Newfie friend she longed to be with . Where Kao went Ailis went-and that meant learning to swim  They are swimming together at the bridge now I am sure angelicon
I also throw cookies in the water-no self respecting boxer will not try to get that cookie :) Good luck

We take our 2 in the pool as often as we can so they can learn to swim to the side and get out if they fall in. They dont mind so much if we are holding them, or if they are standing on the steps, but to make them swim is their least favorite thing to do.
They do ok, but are not big fans of swimming. I'd like to get a boat for them to ride in when we're in the pool, maybe they'll like that!

We just tried getting Oscar to swim this past week... he didn't like it! He likes walking out into the water about up to his chest and loves laying in the shallow water (see avatar!) but as far as swimming, nope. We did kind of pick him up and take him into the deeper water and he did start paddling, but not very well and he looked kind of scared! Poor baby! He did swim a little but then we decided to give him a break for the rest of the day. Maybe we'll try again some other time.

my lola loves to swim in our pool...she actually out swims our lab...she does sometimes sink a little in the behind area, but starts paddeling faster and brings herself up..unlike our lab,she does not have that powerful tail to act as a rudder...our lab, hannah, was already swimming, when lola came to live with us,i think lola just followed her in...when in rome, sorta thinking!!!
