I just found out a local breeder in springfield, MO just had puppies born a few days ago and they will be available the first week of April (1st is my bday). The problem is I am short on funds and my brother won't let me have a dog in the apartment. Man this really sucks.

Just wanted to vent. Anybody have any ideas of how I could talk my brother into letting me get a puppy though?

If you can't afford the puppy how will you afford vet bills, dog food, and other doggie expenses? Dogs aren't cheap. Maybe there isn't enough room in the apartment for a Boxer, and if its your brothers apt-he should have the final say.

I too feel your pain but do not think you should get any animal until your life is more settled. Remember it is a commitment for the dogs life.

I too agree. We never would have imagined that Leila would break her leg at 12 weeks and have vet bills totalling over $1500 just for this alone. Secondly, she has a sensitive GI tract so many hundreds of dollars later.... It is a huge investment well over the initial cost. Think hard about if this is really a good time financially for you to get a puppy. Good luck with the decision.

I agree with the others. Puppies are expensive. I spent over $4300 on my two this past year (with their training included its over $5000). And when they are puppies its even more costly (big crates, dog license, training, vaccinations, spay / neuter, and various vet bills because puppies get sick & hurt a lot just like babies). What would you do if he suddenly needed a 1500.00 surgery because he swallowed a dog toy? Or what if he ends up having boxer cardiomyopathy? Could you afford the daily heart meds? Most vets don’t grant credit.

You have to figure that this dog will be you’re responsibly for the next 10 yrs so you need to be 100% stable. Also it’s very hard to be a renter and find places that accept dogs. I suggest you wait until your more settled. Don’t feel bad we have all been in your position. I had been looking at dogs for years but I waited until I was married and we owned our own house.

Despite your dissapointment this is just not the time for you. The stress of a new pup would be really compounded if your brther does not want it there in his house anyway, never mind vet bills, etc. Your time will come, as will the puppy meant to be yours, when you are in the best place to provide a secure home. Good things (like Boxer pups) :) come to those who wait. Good luck

I also agree to wait. I think it would be best if you had your own place as well. My pups have chewed up so much stuff too. If you can't afford a pup how will you pay your brother back for the things a new pup can ruin? My husband accidentally steped on our younger pup and broke his toe so that was about $700. We have spent about $5,000 so far in one year with 2 pups and that includes toys, food, shots, vet. and so on. That doesn't include the price of the dogs. ;) We got off easy I think. Good luck.

The puppies really are cute, however I do agree that you should probably wait. An another note, the breeder that I got Ronin from, interviewed US before she would even let us bring one of her pup's into our home. I even had to write a letter telling her where we lived, what type of yard and fence we had, etc. Like everyone said, there are many additional costs to owning a dog - other than the original purchase price of the puppy itself. Best of luck to you and I know it's disappointing, but the right time will come when you will be more financiallly and residentially situated to bring your boxer baby home :)

I understand what you all are all saying and trust me those thoughts have crossed my mind millions of times. I was just kinda disappointed that I found someone who had puppies so close to me. As far as things to destroy, my brother and I really don't have many things that could be. Except electronics. I think I will wait till summer or something. I am going to try and work a lot over the summer to save up for a pup. The breeder said she would be having another litter towards the end of the year, so maybe that would work out better(if I can save enough money).

Thanks for everyone's advice again!
