My 8 month old pup started to throw up a lot and wasn't interested in eating. She was still very playful and at times would seem fine. The other morning, she didn't want to eat so I put some goodies in to entice her. She yelped, ran outside and bit at her stomach and layed down. I took her to the vet and they ran some tests and took x-rays. Everything was fine with the exception of high level of something in the pancreas. My vet gave us the option of leaving her for two days and flushing the system or taking her home and feeding her small meals 5 times a day with a low fat food. He said that some dogs have a difficult time processing fat and that we should not have a food over 8% fat. I had been feeding her Natural Balance Ultra Premium but the vet switched her to Hills Prescription Diet i/d as it only has a trace of fat. If I remember from researching food her earlier, there is not a lot of faith in this brand of food. She is eating without a problem and we have not had any problems with the switch. Has anyone heard of this problem before?

Hi there, my girl Lucy who is now 9 months old has just been diagnosed with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency which in other words means that she cannot digest fat and carbs. The vet has put her on panakare powder and California Natural Lamb and Rice which is a low protein and fat food. She has been on this for three days now and so far so good. The powder has to sit in the food for 15 to 20 minutes mixed well so that the food particles can absorb the powder. I paid $95 for a 12 ounce bottle which should last quite a while, she gets a three quarter teaspoon with each meal. The panakare also comes in chewable tablets but my vet does not sell those, only the powder and liquid. The one thing I did find was that if the powder was put on kibble alone and mixed with water it made the kibble gummy. The vet then said to put it in with kibble and a little canned and Lucy eats the whole lot. In only three days I have seen a difference in her weight. The poor girl was only 35 pounds last week. In addition to this she also has demodectic mange which is being treated with liquid ivermectin daily so she is having a rough time of it at the moment. You are lucky your vet found out what was going on. I was going to another vet who kept giving me metronidazole as Lucy had terrible diarrhea all the time. I went to another who took blood and sent it away for a TLI test. The score should be between 5 and 12, Lucy's was 1.5 which is really low. I hope this helps some, did the vet not suggest giving her the panakare? I had before tried Prozyme, B-enzymes and bakpak plus with no results. The panakare is the only thing so far that has helped. I do hope your furbaby feels better soon.

I hope your baby gets better soon! I've not had any experience with this problem, but I feed my two California Natural lamb and rice and they do very well on it.
