Hi guys. I was wondering if what I heard at my dog club is true. I have a 55lbs or 25kg, 14 month old boxer. He's not very tall, and I mentioned his size to someone because I'm wondering how big he'll get? He's about 50cm tall (measured from the ground to top of his head... rough estimate) The person mentioned that perhaps he's a Miniature Boxer as opposed to the more common English Boxer. Do these two types exist, because I find it hard to believe anything weighing 25kg is miniature, if it's still going to growing for another 18 months or more.

No such thing as a miniture Boxer. I cannot belive someone who's part of a Boxer Club would even utter such a sentence! A mini boxer

Your boy sounds about average for weight. Boxers tend to grow tall and then grow out (meaning topping off their weight) at around 2 yrs old. Your baby still has a bit of time yet to be at his mature height/weight.

Mini boxer? smashicon

No, I think size differs in dogs just like in people. Pearl is petite and 48#. People ask me all the time if she's a puppy and I think they are just used to seeing oversized or fat dogs that they don't know what to think when they see a lean, fit dog.

Sienna is 49 pounds, and 18 inches at the shoulders. shes two. but her mom was small and her dad was big, so I guess shes somewhere in the middle

Lola is quite lean, she's 55lbs and 17 months old, Zebs is 46lbs and nearly 8 months old.

There are basically 2 body shapes for boxers I think gmac said, leggy lean ones or square & stocky.
I have 1 of each :)

They're just like us and vary in size & shape, some are short, some tall. :)

They do not come in miniture. That was an uneducated person even if it was an all breed club that is a silly thing to say.

Thanks for the advice guys. Just to clear things up. It's not a boxer club, it's an all-breed dog training club so it was probably just the person's opinion, but having read the replies, my mind is at ease that he'll grow up to be a normal boxer (if anything about a boxer can be called normal :) )

I've never heard of "miniature" boxers, but I HAVE heard that German bloodlines produce bigger, bulkier dogs, while "North American" lines (more diluted and less German-pure???) result in leaner and finer-framed dogs, even though they can still be 'big' in terms of height. Is there truth to this?

I've heard that the German bloodlines can produce stockier, thicker dogs as opposed to the leaner, lankier more athletic looking NA dogs.

It entirely depends on which dog you're looking at. Just as there is a lot of difference between individual Nth American dogs, so too is there a lot of differrence between German specimens. It is a VERY big generalisation to make differences between "types" and one that can be disproven simply by picking a different pair of dogs to compare. Amongst correct dogs, there is very little difference between countries (more difference between incorrect ones - but that's hardly a good measure to be using ;)).

If there is a size differential though, then it may be reasonable to say that many dogs in this part of the world are somewhat smaller than their Nth American counterparts, though they frequently have more bone.
