Mack is on a diet - as we "speak". He is not obese (yet) but he is a BIG Boxer - leveled out at 87 pounds at 2 years. Then a couple months ago, he went to the vet and he had gained his way up to 89 pounds, and that was with me watching him like a hawk. I know he would end up at 100+pounds if I didn't make an effort. That is my biggest worry with him, that he will have to diet off a lot of weight and suffer. So even at 87, he is not Boxer Standard svelte, but I worry about his joints and the health problems that come from obesity - so I want to help him but not have to starve him forever.
Jean has given you the the basics and if you'd like, Pat, I can email you exactly what I do for Mack, and you can see if you want to use it for Ceasar.
But for now, we are doing a pretty "Tough Love" diet and it's slow going (I have been surprised how slow it's going.) He has lost 2 1/2 lbs in 4 weeks.
The main change I made was to change his kibble from Nature's Recipe to NUTRO LITE. It's not my favorite food, but the only lite one I could find that wasn't for "senior" dogs (Mack is only 2 1/2.)
For breakfast, he's getting 1 cup of NUTRO LITE and for dinner - it's 2 cups NUTRO LITE, 1 cup veggies pureed w/broth and 4 oz lean meat. He gets hungry (and naughty) late in the evening and I have been giving him some fat-free broth with a little Tofu floating in it, warmed. It seems to make his tummy feel better so he calms down. He has been waking up *early* because he wants his breakfast!
I feel like such a meanie, I hate to see him hungry - I get a lot of pleasure out of cooking for him and he can't understand why Mom is holding out on him
