Hi there, my name is Bertie and I'm from England. I thought I'd join this forum in the hope some one could help me with my boxer molly. Molly is a one year old red bitch and she only weighs 45lbs. She just wont eat. She is fit and weel, if a little skinny, but she only eats half a cup of mixer a day. I've tried forcefeeding, and varying her diet. Force feeding, just meant she missed a lot of meals, amd varying her diet led to dioreeah. Hope some one can help.

Hello -

45 lbs for a female is not abnormal, just on the small side. But since you are saying she is skinny, I will take your word for it. However, a one-year-old still has some growing left to do. How many ribs can you see? Can you see her spine? What else makes her look skinny?

What's Mixer? Is it kibble? If so, what brand do you feed? What are its ingredients? I am not from the UK, but perhaps you or other UK members can also speak to the quality of this food and perhaps suggest higher quality foods, if appropriate.

Also, I assume you mean by force feeding that you tried controlled feeding - that is what it sounds like. Is that so?

I also wasn't clear on what you meant by "varying her diet" - were you giving her other kibbles (assuming that's what mixer is :) )? If you were, how did you introduce them, gradually or cold turkey? If you are talking about other things (i.e. yogurt, eggs), what exactly did you give her that gave her diarrhea?

I know it's a lot of questions, but it helps to understand exactly what is happening. Once you answer these questions I or someone else should be able to suggest something.

My female Jesse is just about 15 months. Last month I weighted her and she was a healthy 43lbs. Jesse is thin but not "skinny" You do not see her ribs when she is just standing normal but in certain positions you can see them.

If Molly has been Vet checked and she does not have intestinal worms I am sure she is just fine. Molly will not starve her self. Offer her food 2 to 3 times per day [of a premium kibble (search this site)] and don't feed her table scraps and I am sure she will fill out. Molly is not done growing she will continue for the next year or two.

Mason was about 50 lbs at a year and has grown to 84 lbs at three. Mason was skinny and you could see his ribs too. I took him to a cook out with me once a some crazy lady started yelling at me she was going to call the ASPCA or something on me since she thought I was starving him - Mason was getting 7-8 cups of food at the time. I had my doubts that Mason would fill out too!

Boxers mature late so she should fill out in time. But I do know people with mature females that are about 55 lbs. My neighbors mature male is only about 55 lbs too.

I would take her to the vet and have him/her determine if Molly is too skinny or just of small build.

Some dogs are just picky eaters, so you may want to dry different brands of food or mix something in to make it more interesting. But sometimes a lack of interest in food could be an indication of a health problem, so either way I would check with your vet just to be sure.

Let us know how it goes

My female is 58lbs. full grown at four years. She is very, very lean, and like yours will miss several meals at a time. I once asked my vet about it and he said it is just something boxers do. She's healthy, if a little skinny.

My female Chloe is about 15 months and only 38 pounds, but she has always been very petite right from birth. Our vet thinks she is very healthy and would be overweight if she weighed much more. Our trainer calls her a miniature boxer.
