Well, it could just be that the beef doesn't agree with her. Not enough calcium is one reason why stools can get loose, but upset tummies is another ;)

its really loose stool not exactly diarrhoea, she doesnt have a grumbly tummy or anything like she does when she eats something that makes her sick. should i try to give her a bit of calcium supplement until i get her bones from the butcher next week? also can she have too much calcium?

Yes, she can have too much calcium - and would end up with the opposite problem (constipation) as a result. As an adult, there aren't really any other concerns about excess calcium than that.

Anyway, you can certainly try adding bone to the diet. Perhaps it is too light in bone content and that will make a difference. If you were to try bones (small enough to be chewed up and consumed) making up 30-40% of the meal, you'd pretty soon get an answer on that one, I think.

Or why not try chicken now and beef later? That way, when you intro beef again, you can feed with some chicken (with bone). Chicken is usually the easiest digestable wise, most dogs don't have a problem with it. Sometimes it's just the adjustment period, but it doesn't sounds like it's that to me. Sounds more like an allergy- cause didn't you say she was also itchy? I'd get her stablized on the lamb, intro chicken and re intro beef it later. IMO.

Where's the Beef?

I know whenever I have tried putting Diesel on any beef based diet, even super high quality brands, it just doesn't agree with him. He does fine on lamb and chicken, but forget the beef. He gets the WORST gas and is whining at the door constantly to go out.

im not keen on giving her chicken because of the possibe bird flu situation here in the uk, i dont want to get her used to chicken and then maybe have to stop.

as for her itchines, the vet said to keep her on the beef to give her time to adjust and get her ear problem under control in the next 10 days by using topical steroids (surolan) and once it is to stop the drops. then if the problem comes back we know it wasnt an infection of some sort but more than likely the beef.

gmacleod, off to the vets in a mo to have her ears checked, they are still red though. i need to make a decision with her food really as her stools are still very loose and black. should i go back to lamb mince to get her back on track and then maybe try rabbit mince for a while?

Well, if it's still very loose, I think you can reasonably conclude that either beef does not suit her or she has some other problem going on there.

I would certainly go back to the lamb mince, since you know that causes no dietary problems. If the loose stool clears up, then you've got a clear indication that beef does not agree with her. If it doesn't clear up, then you have a good indication that there is some other problem (and having a vet check that out would be a good idea).

Working on the assumption that reverting to lamb clears everything up, then I think trying rabbit next is a good idea. Then perhaps another meat or fish, and then maybe giving the beef another try. If you get the same reaction from beef on the second attempt, then I think it's pretty conclusive that it doesn't suit her and has to be taken off the menu there ;)
