Romie is still having problems with runny poops....on saturday she ate a sausage, egg & cheese biscuit that my nephew had dropped in the yard - I figured it would have passed by now. How long does it take for them to get back to normal?

I took her to the vet today for her shots & completely forgot to ask them about it. She got her rabies & whatever else is in the second round. They found that she had a yeast infection in her ear from swimming in the pond & also an allergy on her tummy from either grass or poison ivy - could either one of these be contributing to her diarrhea? Is there any doggy sickness out there that ONLY causes diarrhea - b/c otherwise she is acting perfectly normal. Please help! My carpet is beginning to look like its polka dotted! :( YUCK!

In the future, you may want to delay any vaccinations when Romie is not well. It means her immunity is lowered and the vaccinations are an additional assault on her system. Based on all the issues she's dealing with simultaneously I would bet her immune system is very stressed.

Fortunately she is active and I imagine still eating well and this is a good sign. However, I would feed her a bland diet for a couple of days (boiled chicken/ground beef & rice/oatmeal) and watch closely for improvements. If things don't turn around right away, I would go back to the vet and take in a stool sample. She may be dealing with something else that she'll need some help fighting off.

Good luck, and I do hope Romie is feeling better very soon.

P.S. You could also try mixing in a tsp. of canned plain pumpkin and see if that helps.

Ground Beef

Try the ground beef for a while. I wouldn't do the rice until you make sure she doesn't have anything else going on.

Coccidia (sp?) causes diarrhea. They can pick it up in the ground. If it doesn't go away in a few days I would take her to the vet to get tested.

Various parasites and bacterial infections can cause diarreah, that's why I wouldn't let it go on too long. If a change in bland diet doesn't work quickly, I'd see the vet just to be safe because the only way to know is to check a stool sample thoroughly for parasite/bacterial activity. You might even want to see if you can drop off a sample today and have them call you if anything unusual shows up.

No kibble for a couple of days, only bland diet. When the stool is firm again, you can slowly mix in the kibble over a few days until she's back on her regular diet again. Hope Romie's feeling herself again soon!

The last 2 days her stools have seemed fine & then this morning she had HUGE accidents in the living room in between the time I let her back in from outside & the time I put her in her crate to go to work. She must have gone in 4 separate places. Since I was in the shower & drying my hair, I didn't hear her whining to go out! She seems to be going a lot more than usual too. SO, I give her boiled chicken & rice or boiled ground hamburger meat? Is that right? I gave her some yogart on Sunday & maybe thats what helped her firm it up. I will try that again & some pumpkin...but in the meantime, any meal suggestions for her would be great! Thanks guys! :)

Usually a bland diet contains some grain (white or brown rice or oatmeal) along with the boiled meat (chicken or beef). I usually cook the chicken or beef in lots of bottled/filtered water and then use the "broth" to cook the grain. Some people put it all in a pot or crockpot and cook them together which is also good. I would use more water than usual because you want the grain very soft as Romie's digestive system is irritated already and you want her food to be easily digested. Adding plain yoghurt is a good idea as this will help her digestion. Adding the plain pumpkin adds some fiber which bulks up her stools by absorbing extra liquid.

Also, whiles she's on the bland diet cut out all other treats, supplements or additives. You can use the boiled meat as a treat for training if you wish but stay away from processed treats as her digestive system is healing.

Good luck to you and Romie. (Our girls are only two days apart :))

Chicken & Rice

Last night I fed Romie chicken & rice and she LOVED it! Ate it all & was whining for more. I've never seen her eat ALL of her food like that before-can i feed this to her from time to time as a treat or is it "bad" for them? Also, I gave her the pumpkin and she seems to be slowing down a little bit w/ the diarrhea. After her GIANT accident yesterday, she only went 2 more times the whole night & it seems to be getting less & less each time. THANK GOODNESS! I got most of the stains out of the carpet with Spot Shot - that stuff is amazing! :)

I took Romie out again when I went home from lunch & her poop is now a yellowish color & what looks like mucous (?) in it and it is still pretty runny. I know that is incredibly gross - but does any know what might be wrong w/ her? She is still full of energy & still eating....
