I have a 19 week old boxer who about a week ago hit the 30 lb mark and the food I use said I have to increase him from 2 3/4 cup a day to 3 1/2 cups a day....

After I did that I noticed the his poop was coming out a little soft, it still came out with form but it was coming out a little soft....I thought nothing of it...

5 days ago we had our pup and went to visit our friends boxer pup, they played full tilt for about 6 hours straight. The next day our pup was tired and had crazy diarrhea.

The last few days he has had solid poops in the morning but once we get him moving they just turn to liquid again...

He is eating all his food and he is drinking lots of water...We have been giving him pumpkin and some rice to try and stop the diarrhea but that only works for a few poops then it is back to liquid....

Any suggestions.....(He still has lots of energy and I have not seen a difference in his temperment he is just the same as he was before other then the mass exodus coming out of the back end)

Thanks

the food I use said I have to increase him from 2 3/4 cup a day to 3 1/2 cups a day....

So you have added a total of an additional 3/4 cup of food to his total intake PER DAY (or did you add this per meal) and he is eating an additional 1.5 cups per day?

Feeding guidelines are merely a "suggestion". It isn't something that is set in stone and all dogs are different. The easiest thing to do would be to remove some of the food and see if it changes anything. Too much food can certainly cause diarrhea. Adding that additional amount of food might be better suited doing so with a 3rd feeding daily (if you were not already doing so). Too much going in at one time will often times result in too much coming out quickly and loose.

If the food change doesn't make a difference then perhaps you have something else going on and a fecal should be done. It could be a coincidence timing-wise with the introduction of the extra food and a parasite/worms (for example).

Thanks for the info....We are feeding him 2 times a day and a total of 1 3/4 cup each time....I will reduce him by a 1/4 a cup each feeding and see if that helps.....

I never thought that I was possibly feeding him too much I was more concerned that I didnt want to starv him....

Thanks....

At 19 weeks he should be eating at least 3 meals a day if possible. Also the better the quality of food the less you actually need to feed. Maybe cutting back on the total amount of food and spreading it over 3 meals will help. Please keep us posted.

Thanks again....

I have also noticed over the past few days that he has lots of eye puss.....I think I might try less food and more frequent like three times a day and then if it doesnt get better go to the vet....

He eyes have a yellowish puss if he sleeps for a while.....Is that normal...

Is it actually puss or just dry eye goo? If puss, then a visit to the vet is in order. Could be an infection of some sort.

What food are you feeding? It is possible the increase of eye goo and diarrhea is a sign of a food allergy. Many of us feed grain-free foods. It has helped a lot of dogs become more regular. Grains, particular corn is an allergen ingredient. Some dogs can digest, some can't and some have an allergy to it.

Check dogfoodanalysis.com and search your food. See where it rates star wise on the list. It's always better for the dog to feed a 4-5 star food just for the tolerant ingredients and quality of protein source, plus less fillers and other gunk that our dogs never need. The better the food, the less food you have to feed and the better consumption of nutrients goes into the dog, hence less poops. A lot of foods are also full of sodium, which can cause excessive thirst, again, hence the diarrhea.

With boxers, they are prone to allergies and digestive issues. So to start with a good quality food helps in battling many issues that this breed faces. It is also said that the cheaper foods that have undigestible or poor quality ingredients contributes to the cancer that soo many breeds face. Along with over vaccinations, it makes the body a weakened immune system.

I have to say, all four of my 60-70 lb. dogs only eat 2-2/3 cups of 5 star food a day. And even on that amount, two could afford to lose a few pounds. So it's sounds like the food you are feeding is lesser quality, possible cause of the diarrhea from increased amounts, and the increase in thirst. Just a thought that a food switch may be a good decision. If you do decide to switch, do it over a 5 day period so not to upset his system. Decrease his current food and increase the better food each day.

Before we changed him to this food he was on a not so good food loaded with corn and wheat, once we switched to this food his stool got less soft and started to form actual logs, and up until last week his stool was nice a firm....

Today I took note as to what was in his stool, the first two were formed and semi solid and the last one was pretty runny, I did however notice some carrots. The last time I fed him carrots was about 3 days ago, this would lead me to think I was just feeding the little guy too many snacks....

So I have cut out the treats until his stool gets better and we will see how that works....

I did notice that he was eating a lot of plants in the park so that might have also been the cause of it...

As for the puss versus eye goo...Im not sure which it is....Normall he has eye goo but only after he gets up from a nap or in the morning...This eye good seems to be a little more frequent and I clean the goo away every hour or so....

On the flip side of things he has lots of energy and just wants to go run around outside and play so I think it might just be too much food..

Weston was bottle fed since his mother died giving birth to him and his brother, 9 pups didnt make it either so we got him from a rescue that took him in and bottle fed him so maybe the reccomended feeding on the bag is for a regular dog I think our dog at 32 lbs is probably a little small....

What do you think about the food....The place I got it as in Saskatoon Canada highly recomended it, they are a breeder and a animal health food store...
