diarrhea and bleeding...when to call vet??/

Hi all...I haven't posted in awhile, but I need some help. My 18mo brindle female apparently had diarrhea while I was at work today. I came home and it was ALL over her crate. After a few minutes, I noticed she kept squatting in the back yard...I noticed fresh blood dripping on the grass and FREAKED!!!

Should I take her to the vet immediately? I haven't seen anymore for about an hour, which has to be a good sign. All I know is I am scared. I've decided not to give her any food or water until tomorrow, and them I will probably give her a little pumpkin. Anything else I can try? I feel so bad for her...

Yes, I'd take her to the vet! You'd go to the doc if you were bleeding out the butt????

Don't feed her anything until tomorrow, take her to the vet immediately tomorrow morning.

Oh, poor baby . .. her little back end is probably sore if she's had diarrhea all day. I would definitely call the vet and get their opinion. Lizzie does well on beef and rice when she's sick. Sometimes, we just give her plain rice if I think the beef is too greasy for her to handle. Good luck -- I hope your sweetie feels better soon!!

She has to have water or she will get dehydrated! Better is Pedialyte, which restores electrolytes. If her stools don't firm up some in a day I would definitely see the vet. It could just be a bug or something she ate but could also be serious; plus your vet can give her a shot to stop the runs almost immediately. Good luck!

There could be oodles of things causing the blood. Could be from straining to defacate, could be a parasite, could be parvo possibly an intestinal blockage of somesort...ooodles of things. I would assume at her age, shes got all her shots so i wouldnt worry so much about parvo, but it would still be cause for concern, I suggest though that you do take her and and when you do Id bring a stool sample just in case they ask for one, this way you wont have to go back in after with one.

thanks...this is my plan...

I am going to watch her closely all night. She is in a good mood so I am not overly worried right now...I will give her some pedialyte either tonight or first thing in the morning with some rice and pumpkin...that worked well the other time she had diarrhea...I just hope the bleeding was from strain and nothing else. She is such a chewer and I am sure she ate something she wasn't supposed to!!

Poor baby girl. Ty and I are sending lots of good vibes to her. I would call the vet in the morning if she continues with diarrhea. Hope she's all better real soon-please keep us posted.

The rule of thumb I have gotten from many vets, as my dogs had terrible colitis for years, is if the blood is red you are okay (unless its gushing, but I think that is obvious enough) if the stool is black and tar-ey get to the vet ASAP.
If your dog has never had anything like this before I would go to the vet and get her checked for worms, ect. but it doesn't sound like an emergency.

yes, if the stool is tarry, then you have problems. Tarry stool can be a sign of intestinal parasites

Update...

Hi all...thanks for the well wishes....

I called my vet and left a message. He finally called back and said he wanted me to give her some kaeopectate for the next 24 hours...he said she must have eaten something since it hit her so fast...

The meds are already working (she went to poo and it is almost a version of solid) and she seems to feel great...she was all over the kids and playing like usual. My 9 year old boxer is already exhausted ;o)

Tomorrow, its bland white rice and some pumpkin. I'll do anything to get her back to normal...
