For the past 4 days Java has been having episodes of diarrhea somewhere between the hours of 1:30 a.m. and 6:00 a.m. She is usually home by herself during the day and seems to be fine. The kids get home from school at 2:30 p.m. and then she is let out as much as she wants (UGH!!) throughout the evening until we go to bed. If my husband gets up in the middle of the night, he lets her out and tries to keep an eye on her to see what she is doing. Most of the time it is just sniffing for squirrels. She has been very gassy during these past days as well. Like room clearing gassy ... and she is never been that type of Boxer appicon ... lol. She is 5 1/2 years old and has been in perfect health up until now.

Any advice that you guys might have would be appreciated before I rush her off to the vet!!!

Thank you!

Have you changed her food recently, or added some new treats to her diet? Or perhaps she has gotten into something that she shouldn't have--maybe something out in the yard like squirrel poop or acorns or something.

No new treats ... or at least nothing that she hasn't had in the past, but we were questioning the acorn thing. Seriously ... why would they eat acorns .... BLECH!!! Silly dogs. That is probably it .... I'll have to keep an eye on her more.

Gastrointestinal upset and diarrhea are two of the symptoms of ingesting acorns. Acorns do contain a substance that in large quantities can cause renal failure, so if it turns out that she's been eating alot or even if you think that she might have, I would give a call to the vet.

This is probably not the problem but once I used to keep food in a large plastic bin. The oils in the bin had gone bad I guess over time and this caused a toxic reaction in my Boxer. I felt horrible about it. I threw the bin away and all the food in it an the issue resolved. I grew up on a farm and hadn't a thought about a plastic bin causing issues.

Just shar'in.

We gave her a bit of Pepto last night to see if that would help and we had a night of no pooping in the living room appicon. I'm still keeping an eye on her. I don't think that if she is eating acorns, that she is eating enough to make her stomach upset. Honestly, I think she just likes to chew on them and spit them out. I walked around the back yard yesterday and there aren't even a ton of them left. We have some very industrious squirrels who are very fat and happy. This makes them slow and Java is on a mission to catch one ... lol.

She is still room clearing gassy though. If that doesn't clear up by this afternoon, I'm going to give the vet a ring.

Fun times ;)

Mine was picking them up during walks and I would dig them out of his mouth or he would spit them out. I read that even they bit into them it could cause tummy upset because they are so potent. So she may not have to eat tons of them, even 1 could cause a tummy ache.
