Diarreah

We have a 17 mo old male boxer, Riggs who has had diarreah pretty consistently for about 4 weeks now. Our vet has tested him for every parasite or bacteria imaginable (including giardia and coccidia) and they have come back negative. He has been on prednosone and sulfisalinate and another anti-inflammatory for about 3 weeks without much of a consistent result. The vet's latest approach was he took a blood sample to be analyzed, and he is thinking it is an underactive pancreas. It is baffling us all, as other than the diarreah, Riggs has a great appetite (he's on a strict diet of white rice and boiled chicken pet vet's orders) and his energy level is normal.

Does anyone have some advice as to what to look for when the blood tests come back? Has anyone had similar experience and can offer some advice on where to go from here? Should we seek out a specialist?

I was just searching the site for information on the sulfasalazine. Abby is a year old and has constant diarhea, but she also can get mucas in her stool. My vet diagnosed her as having colitis. I have not yet put her on the sulfa because I have heard that Tylan Powder is more commonly used. I hope everything works out... Are the medications not working? Also, Abby eats very well, it just all comes out. She also is not gaining weight.

No the medication is not working. It is intermittent between semi-firm and a total mess. There is also no mucus in his stool. Riggs is also not gaining weight, and has actually lost about 4-5 pounds in the last month. He is eating like a horse, 4 cups of rice/chicken 4 times/day. I know this isn't as calorie dense as kibble, but it seems like he should be at least maintaining.

I guess we'll see how the blood test results come back and go from there.

Are you sure you guys tested him for tapeworms?? That's what it sounds like. Molly had pancreitis - I think it is the liver enzymes being raised that diagnoses it. The sulfa worked really fast for her and she was better in no time. Dogs prone to pancreitis do better on bland foods without a ton of ingredients but it could also be a food allergy and Molly for one is allergic to chicken & beef. Try lamb and rice and see how it goes.

No parasites were found in Abby. I spoke to my breeder last night and she said that I should try Tylan powder. She said that Tylan powder works really well. So I am going to hold off on the sulfa and try the Tylan powder first. I hope we can find something to help our babies. Good luck.

Well, the blood tests came back negative as of today. Riggs has been tested for tapeworms, ringworms, coccidia, giardia and almost every other parasite or organism and it has come back negative. At this point, we are consulting the breeder and will be researching specialists. Does anyone have any recommendations on veterinary specialists in the Philly area?

I do know one thing, we're very reluctant to keep him on medication is when they do nothing to correct the problem.
