we picked our baby up from the vet yesterday (tuesday). she was spayed on monday and stayed over night. everything went fine. her incision looks good and she is acting fairly normal, though not jumpy thankfully...she ate well last night and this morning (we feed solid gold holistique, mixed with a little s.g. canned, and seameal), but she has had terrible diahrea since she got home. last night it was totally liquid! is this normal after surgery? the vet folks said that she did not eat at all when she was there, so I guess she went for two solid days with no food (fast b/4 surgery and then the whole day after). they suggested that we feed her boiled hamburger and rice for a few days. I've read on the boards that chicken is good, too, as well as a little pure pumpkin. does this sound okay? any other thoughts? if I do chicken, what is the best way to cook it? TIA

You could cook the chicken any way you like really. Boiling it up with the rice would do just fine.

She'll probably come right after a day or two, but anasthetic can have that sort of effect (on people too!). Once it's all out of her system, she should be back to normal.

Diarehia is a common side effect of medication, give her a few days and it should clear right up especially with some bland homecooking and pumpkin.
I get some chicken parts and cover them with water in a pot, boil them until the chicken is soft enough to easily pull off the bone then I use the chicken water (broth) to make brown rice. Once it's cooled I just throw it together in a bowl with a teaspoon of pure pumpkin. You an also try giving her a teaspoon of plain yogurt to replace the good bacteria in her intestines that she lost while being ill.
Try to get her to drink alot of water to help with fluid loss.
It's not uncommon for a pup not eat while away from home either. Magoo tends not to eat even if we go away for a night and he as a sitter here with him at our house.

thanks so much for the advice! after two bland, home cooked meals she is already starting to firm up. what a relief!!!
