My husband took lulu today for her daily run. He took her to the dog park. She was still on leash and another dog was also on leash and sitting there. Lulu went up to say hi . Then the owner said sometimes his dog nips and with those words the dog lunged for lulu and DH saved her and the dog bite him thru his coat and shirt and gave him a good punture. So it was off to the doctor.. When other people heard about it and asked which dog bite him, they all knew the dog and said he was very aggresive..Then don't bring your dog to a community dog park!! This dog park has wonderful hiking trails, etc. and it also has an enclosed area where you take your dog off leash and let them play..For the most part Lulu has had a lot of fun there. She is 6 months and gets along with everyone. However, there are times when dogs get into quite a scuffle and I have seen blood drawn between the dogs..I wonder how many of you go to a dog park, and how do you feel about the community play areas?

I enjoy taking Caine to the dog park. Granted he has only been twice and is 16 weeks old.
The last time he went, about 2 weeks ago there was another dog there who seemed to be a bit agressive and he came after my poor pup. CAine rolled on his back and was yelping as I watched this dog stick his mouth around his neck... I was MORTIFIED.... needless to say the owners did not do a whole lot, so i took it upon myself to put the dog in a head lock and threw him to the ground... I know it sounds rough but he was hurting my dog... i was so angry.

If your dog is agressive then they should not be allowed at an off leash dog park. It's not right and causes problems for other people and their dog.
When i made it home i found blood on Caines little sweater.. Needless to say i dont think i will be going back to that park and will find another.. even if i have to drive further out of my way!!

Jade and I haven't been to a dog park yet but we want to soon and now I am scared. How terrible that people don't have any control over their pups. Why they think that if their dog has nipped before that they should take them places that they will likely do it again is WRONG. I hope DH feels better soon.

:( Sometimes I just want to shake people until their teeth rattle! WHY do irresponsible people feel the need to own dogs?!?!?! Why can't they just leave the canines to those of us who actually give a care? I'm sorry your DH got bitten, I do hope he is doing alright. I've been bitten before, an accident by a panicky dog, but still was pretty painful. I am glad he was able to protect your baby though :) Its amazing what we do for our darlings... I have been considering signing up for our local dog park... now I am not so sure I want to :(

Not to call you out, but you take your dog to a dog park and he's only 16 WEEKS?!?! Are you serious? Do you know all the diseases your puppy can catch there? Parvo is ALL over the place. Bordatella is ALL over the place. Dogs share water all the time. Let alone, the aggression problems. Dogs AND owners.

IMO, people who take their dogs to a dog park are irresponsible themselves. Sorry to say, but I say from experience. I used to take my dog, and I grew to hate it after the third time. What's wrong with taking your dog on a long relaxing walk? What's wrong with taking it to a fenced in baseball field and throwing it's frisbee or ball for 15-20 mins? Google "why dog parks are bad", you will find some really good articles. A dog fight can happen so quickly and aside from the physical trauma, your dog may be dog aggressive for it's life and that is a real problem to deal with.

First, hooray that your DH prevented a fight (sorry that he got bit). Second, I know what you mean about some people. My poor Harley got attacked as we were trying to leave a dog park once. It was horrifying! I had to let the leash go so he could defend himself and I couldn't stop it myself. NEVER did the owner of the other dog make an appearance. EVERYBODY was watching the fight and NOBODY stepped forward to help. He had a bleeding cut tounge and I later discovered sets of bite mark scabs on both sides of neck as the dog had him pinned by the back of the neck at one point . Needless to say, we never returned. It's a shame that these people own dogs in the first place...if they don't know enough about their own pet to keep them out of trouble, much less to protect other animals from them if they know they are a threat, they shouldn't own a dog at all! Nobody is perfect, but come on!

We haven't had any experiences like that at our local dog park. There was this one dog that was there every Sunday, a black lab puppy, who was a bit too aggressive with Lucy. Luckily that owner had a pattern so we came at different times. I always see the dogs with their owners and everyone I have met seems responsible. Lucy loves it there! We started taking her as soon as she was finished with all her shots. I think it's been really good for socializing her, and she really gets to run around. Ours is so big with a couple lakes though, so if there's an aggressive dog, we could just move. I definitely wouldn't want you guys to stay away from dog parks, but maybe check them out alone without your dogs first?

Long walks are wonderful, but there's something to be said for getting your dog off-leash. It helps dogs get rid of excess energy so much faster, and if you can find the right sort of dogs for your dog to hang out with ( that's a big if sometimes, I know) they can just enjoy each other's company so much. I would LOVE to find a good fenced in baseball field in my area - the ones in the municipal parks don't have any fencing, and the high school fields near me are beautifully, safely fenced but are locked up tighter than Fort Knox.

We love the dog park! We are very fortunate that we have found mostly wonderful dogs and owners. I know that there are those who are irresponsible so I watch my dog closely and what he is doing with whom, much as I supervised by children when they were small and went to a 'people park'. Yes, there were the occasional bullies, but that's why it was my job to be there to supervise. I know that bad things can happen in an instant with dogs so it's important to watch the body language, not congregate in the area near the gate where trouble is most likely to happen if it's going to.

For me the wonderful socialization outweighs the 'chance' of something bad happening. Be vigilant, know your dog and make your own choice. For us, we love to go and will continue.

I'm so sorry that your husband was bit, I hope that he heals quickly and comfortably.

Not a fan of the dog parks. Over excited dogs, people do not pick up, all the folks stand around talking while timid digs are tormented by the bullies (my girl is a bully so I get to say that :) ). I am lucky to have found a walking group and we do off lead play in our "spots". I think some parks can be great and it all depends on the folks who visit them. And all the years I have been around dogs the park was the only place I got bit too-again dogs in the heat of a scuffle do not see or acknowledge that hand reaching in... Stupid on my part but I did it before I even thought about it...
