I have to schedule Nikita to be spayed and I was wondering about the pros and cons of removing the dew claw.

I just had 10 puppies docked and dew claw removed it cost me $180. I think that was resonable. After all if most breeders would do the same the poor dogs wouldn't have to go through it in pain later on.

This made me curious...the large differences in prices...so I made a few phone calls in our area.

Vet A - $8.40 per puppy tail/dewclaw removal
They also charge an office call of $25

Vet B - $22 per puppy tail/dewclaw removal +
you have the option of having this done via lazer, which is $51 more for 1-5 puppies, and it goes up from their.

Vet C - $4 Dewclaws + $6 tails per puppy +
an office visit of $27.

All 3 of these vets offices that I called, are more expensive on normal procedures than my vet, in the same area.

When I got my Amy girl her dew claw was already done with the tail docking.
I think the procedure was done cheaply as Amy did not have evidence of a stich in her tail and she had problems with it being stubbed open all the time for a few weeks.
(I got her at 12 weeks old) the dew claw scar looks like an X and one looks a bit untidy. So I wonder whether the more expensive procedure is actually done with more care ie a stich placed etc... for better healing. * I have also heard on asking also why the claw is removed; that this is done so they do not get caught in fences etc. But I have also seen a boxer with the claw still on and it was very tight to the leg and did not trouble at all. I feel however as my Amy is very boisterous jumps and uses her arms a lot that it is lucky for her (and us) that it was removed I guess.
Best Regards
