Dew Claw Removal

*SIGH*...What a day I had yesterday....Sunday afternoon, Angel (5 yr. old female) was jumping up on my fence, and one of her front dew claws ripped. I clipped off what I could, stopped the bleeding and bandaged it up. She seemed to be in pain, but it was later on in the afternoon, and I gave her some Metacam...and decided to take her into the clinic first thing in the morning. Yesterday morning, I took her in and we had to sedate her JUST to take the bandage off. Needless to say she was in more pain than I had thought. After the Dr. looked at it, he highly recommended removal of the dew claw, especially since this has happened before with Angel. The surgery went very well, and she recovered from the anasthesia very well. I am just so exhausted, I spent all day with her at the clinic and then all night last night I was waking up every now and then to check her breathing etc. I know the worst part is over, but I'm still worried about my baby. She is going to be resting this week, ie. no exercise except around the house, but is there any protocol or signs I should be looking for in regards to any after effects from the anasthesia? Any advice would be VERY helpful!! Thanks for reading

You really shouldn't see any effects from the anesthesia after the first night/day. She may not be real hungry today--that is fine, offer her small amounts of food and just be sure she is drinking water. You really don't need to worry about not exercising her--there is not any need for "bedrest" since she only had her dewclaws removed. Just be sure to keep the bandages dry and as clean as possible and don't let her chew them; otherwise its business as usual, really! Hope she heals quickly!

Thanks for the advice and reassuring words Jill!! She actually seems to be herself today, barking at people walking by etc...She did wolf down her breakfast this morning...so that's a good sign!!
