Completely Boxer Crazy
So glad to hear yo were able to get Rocky an appt. Good luck and our thoughts and prayer are with you both. I know how emotionally draining this time is, everytime I would look at Josi..I would just cry. But now you have a ray of hope and Rocky will be given the best care by Ohio State and the best chances to live happily with this condition. I didn't go into Josi's cardiologist appt. thinking they were going to tell me her earlier dx. was wrong, I just hoped for the best possible outcome under the circumstances and that is what I got. Josi told me tell to send you both lots of boxer wiggles and slobbery kisses. Take care and keep us updated :)

Boxer Insane
Hi Marisa,

My parents boxer was diagnosed 4 years ago with BCM. We also took him to Ohio State (we live in Pittsburgh too!!!) to see a cardiologist. He has been on medication ever since. We were lucky enough at the time this all happened that Dr. Kate Meurs excepted him into her BCM study. He goes to OSU yearly for a echo and holter monitor (just went last weekend.) Although Dr. Meurs is no longer at OSU (she is at WSU now) there are still good cardiologist's at OSU that will take care fo your baby. If Rocky does have BCM, he still could live years with the disease if he is on medication to help control the vpc's. We just found out that after 4 years of living with BCM that Cayeen's heart is just starting to show signs of damage so he has been put on enacard on top of his other meds.

Good luck tomorrow at OSU, I will keep you and Rocky in my thoughts and prayers. Please keep us updated and let us know how it went. ((hugs))

My little man has this too

Hi, just wanted to post a message offering my support and advice if needed. In February this year my little man, George, was diagnosed with dilated cardiomyopathy. His heart was beating incredibly fast. This came as a terribly shock and we were devastated. He was put on meds, digoxin, had ECGs, ultrasounds, but his heart didn't change. The meds also made him very sick so we decided to stop the tablets and let him have a quality of life. Up until a few weeks ago he was fine (without walks, limited exercise) but recently his stomach started to swell. We took him to a vet and unfortunately he now has fluid on his stomach caused by his heart. He is now taking diuretics to reduce the fluid and an alternative heart med (vetmedin) to try and help his heart.

This is so trying as we hate to think of his heart struggling like this.

As another poster mentioned, Dr. Kate Meurs is no longer at OSU, however another cardiologist who was responsible for bringing Dr. Meurs to OSU and who worked with her on various Boxer studies/papers is Dr. Linda Lemkuhl. She is now at MedVet in Worthington, Oh (suburb of Columbus).
She is EXCELLENT and is a wonderful caregiver.
She is Cami's cardiologost and I can't speak highly enough about her.

good news and good news

All,
I just got a call from my husband. He, Rocky and my mom just left Ohio State and they said that he does NOT have congestive heart failure and they are not even sure about the cardiomyopatly at this point!!!!!!They are going to send us a halter test to be sure; He can come off of both heart medications too.
I am so thankful that I read all of your posts, epically those of you that said we must see a registered cardiologist.
How is it that last week the Vet here in PA told us that our Rocky had weeks to months and now we come to find out this is not true! What if we didn’t have the money to take Rokcy to Ohio State! We would have kept him on both heart medications and ended up hurting him! WE ARE SO THANKFUL TODAY, but at the same time we are HIGHLY upset with the vet we went to.
Ill be in touch…..
Until next time!
Marisa
