dental care

Hi just curious as to what people recommend for maintaince in the way of dental. If we got Boo as a pup I'd try brushing,(that's what I do with my cat) but he's almost 3 & I'm not sure he'll let me.
I give him dental bones & chews but I don't feel its enough.
I'm hesistant of the liquids you add to water but does anybody have success with it.
Just curious as to any suggestions anyone may have, thanks

We have hurley bones, dental dinosaurs and non edible durable nylabones and both of my dogs (including my 7 year old) teeth are spotless white, no tarter build up that I can see whatsoever.

Have you tried raw meaty bones? Honestly that's probably the best and most effective along with the things i mentioned above.

I attempt to brush Baxter's teeth when I think of it- we have this poultry flavored toothpaste that he loves- he actually tries to chew the toothbrush, but he'll let me do it.

I figure some brushing is better than none!

If you don't feed raw bones, then you really should look at regular tooth brushing (actually, even if you do feed raw bones, the front teeth will probably still need a bit of attention).

It is awkward with a human-style toothbrush - but have you tried a finger brush? It is just a little rubber brush that sits over your index finger, much like a thimble. Using one of those is a whole lot easier and more effective than a human style brush

i usually use a finger brush to get his front and canines,they arent they problem teeth for most dogs anyway,the incisors and rear teeth,i use a dog brush with enzymatic toothpaste,normally every other day is about all i can remember to do,and its only hit and miss depending on how much my lil guy lets me do before he says"enough,its time to go play"

At Petsmart and Petco you can find a bone shaped dental chew that has bristles in the end. You apply the doggy toothpaste and let the dog chew on it for a little while and it will brush the dog's teeth. I haven't tried it yet but when my puppy gets a little bigger I plan to try it.

Gryphon is at the vet right now having his teeth cleaned. It's costing me $250 to have it done. He's always been a pretty heavy chewer, from nylabones to floss ropes to any other toy I've given him. I guess that wasn't enough for him, but you'd better believe he's getting his teeth brushed every day from now on.
