Well after one negative skin scraping and an anti-biotic our girl was not getting better so I took her back to the vet to have him find mange in her second skin scraping. We started the shampoo and Promeris last night and she is just miserable today :(

I saw this in another post as ways to help boost immune system:

"Missing Link supplement which can be found at local pet stores.
Apple Cider Vinegar (organic) added to water. Small amount to each full bowl daily, about a cap full. I like the brand "Bragg" as it is raw and unfiltered.
Plenty of healthy exercise and sunshine (within limits). Stress free atmosphere.
Fish oil & vitamin C. Fish oil is dosed at about 1000mgs per every 10 lbs. Vitamin C is dosed to bowel tolerance. Too much of either can produce loose stools. Start off with a small amount and work your way up."

My question on the Vit C is can a dog have the chewable orange flavor kind like I give to my kids or should I try burying a regular capsule in bread and peanut butter and give it to her that way ? I think all of ours in 500mg doses, should I just start with one of those a day or is that too much and I should break it in half ?

Thanks for any responses...I just want my old baby back.

My guess is the chewables for children has some sort of sweetner in it and some of those are very toxic to dogs. I would stay away from that one.

My 4 1/2 month old puppy has demodex mange. It was localized but it slowly started spreading to other parts of her body. We were using an oinment called Goodwinol (I believe) but it wasn't working fast enough. Our vet had us start a dip called Mitoban. We just started it last night. I've never heard of either of the medicines your vet is using. When I read about demodex mange it said that the only FDA approved treatments were the ointment and then the dip if the oinment wasn't working.

Mange..

Faith has battled mange her whole life! (12 years) Promeris is something that they just started using in the last couple years. It has worked wonderful for her. Because her mange was left untreated and so severe before she was dumped at the shelter 10 years ago her immune system was ruined. That is why it was hard to get her in remission from the mange for too long at a time. She is just in that very rare percentage that can't beat it for long. Yet here she is at 12 years with a decent coat of hair and on promeris! Now if the lymphoma would just go away! sigh.... At the beginning she had the mitaban dips and then ivermectin. All the drugs have side effects. They are serious pesticides. Still with some dogs the mange is so severe you have no choice but to use them. It took a "specialist" to put her on the promeris and that has worked wonders. She did not show any side effects from those treatments. Hopefully the dips will clear your pup up and it won't come back. Best wishes!

We are now in our third week on the oral ivermectin, seeing improvement!! Jackson hates his cherry flavored syrup though. I've added the apple cider vinegar and he gets yogurt with breakfast. Life is about as stress free as possible, with lots of exercise and lounging on the couch!! I stressed about going this route with the meds, but am glad to see improvement and hopefully this will be the end. Wish you the best in finding a treatment that works and keeps your puppy feeling well!

Here the usual treatment for a dog with demodex mange is:
* 1 ml of ivermectin every day for two months
* Antiseborreic shampoo every five days
* Amitraz baths every five days, day after shampoo

I am currently fostering one dog with demodex mange, but have dealt with it more than once.

In pigeons, some people tried carrot juice for circovirus (most of the times deadly) and apparently it worked. They healed.

Question: Promeris, the one for fleas? Is it supposed to work with mange? I know it has amitraz, but I don't think that is good enough for demodex mange.

Amitraz - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Works like a charm. I use azadieno. You have to use it like a bath, and you have to cover ALL the body, because if not, it wouldn't be so effective. Parasites can hide well.
Do not bath during treatment, do not use shampoos of any kind except for an antiseborreic one the day before. Do not rinse/wash the amitraz off. Let it stay for about 15 mins without having your dog shaking it off after you bathe. Be careful with the dosage.

I think Freyja's problem today was that the vet tech said to put it all down her back.....on Promeris's site they specifically said to only place it between the shoulders where it could not be licked off. I think Freyja licked some of it off her back and that was what made her ill all day today. She is starting to perk up some now, which I am thankful for. I called the vet and told them what the tech had told me as far as application and that it was the wrong way to apply. Hopefully no one else will have to go thru this with the wrongful advice.

I am still hoping somone on here can recommend a good dose of Vit C to start with.

Pls keep all the other mange tips coming, I really appreciate it and want my girl to get better soon. She looks terrible :(

Promeris

Oh my... it is very important to only put promeris on the back of their neck near the top in a small area where they can not lick it. Also if you have other pets it is important that they not lick it. My vets were very clear on that. They also said to make sure humans and children didn't inhale or touch the medicine either. So sorry your vet tech didn't tell you that. Yes it has proven to be VERY effective for treating mange... although the doses are different than when used just for flea treatment. (for an adult dog you give a treatment once a week for a couple of weeks to start, then monthly till negative scrapes for a bit) This is a newer treatment for mange. Of course you would only use for mange if prescribed by a vet. Usually to start with you give two treatments a week apart and then monthly. Because it can make pets very sick if used incorrectly it is not the first treatment of choice. Any of the dips/ medicines ect for mange can make pets sick though. It might not be completely approved for demodect mange YET but my skin specialist vets use it for that with excellent results.
