I was wondering if anyone had any advice for me. My 5 month old was diagnosed w/ demo mange. (Generalized) I have been giving her Ivermectin for 11 days and she is getting worse!! I was wondering if anyone else has gone through this. I chose the Ivermectin opposed to the dips because we have heard nothing but bad things about the dips. She is a large 32 lbs white boxer with no other known health problems. Some people suggest I give her another medication to boost her immune system but as far as i know there is nothing wrong w/ her immune system. If someone could give me some advice, or share their experience w/ me I would really appreciate it.

Demodex mange is an immune system problem, especially if it is generalized. We just got lucy cured of the same thing. I'd suggest giving your dog lots of good foods that'll only help boost the immune system. Also, the ivermectin worked wonders for us, but she was on it for 3 months. It takes some time to clear up. Although it didn't for us, I have heard it gets worse before it gets better. If you are really worried about it getting worse talk to your vet. In the mean time add some missing link to her diet, lots of veggies, yogurt, a good quality kibble. It'll take some time to clear up but it will clear up!
Good luck!

Thanks for the response!!

Thank you for the advice. I am glad your boxer is doing better. I guess it would be a good idea to try and boost her immune system then. Someone told me that garlic works well for boosting immune systems for people. Has anyone ever heard of this for dog's?

Lua&Milla -

First, what are you feeding her? A dog is only as good as the food you feed him/her, and in terms of boosting the immune system -- it all starts with the food ;)

www.boxerworld.com/feeding is a great source of information, in terms of what to look for in a good quality dog food.

Also, if you do a search here on "mange" or "demodex" you will find lots of helpful posts. Good luck

Ahh, I would definitely start by switching her over to a better quality food. Unfortunately, Purina One is a very poor quality food.

Purina One is full of grains and by-products, both of which are ingredients you want to steer clear of and, given your female's health issues right now, a higher quality food is definitely something that she needs to build a healthy immune system.

www.boxerworld.com/feeding has some great information on how to choose a good quality dog food. You can also do a search on "premium" or "quality" dog food, and you will find a lot of great suggestions.

Good luck

Here are a few great quality foods, which seem to be poular by users on this site:

Innova
Canidae
Wellness
Chicken Soup
Solid Gold
Merrick
Natural Balance Ultra
California Natural
Eagle Pack Holistic

You can also visit the websites of the above-mentioned foods to find a retailer near you. Typically, you'll find the best selection at local pet supply stores or feed stores (not so much the PetSmarts and PetCos).

Good luck!
