Boxer Booster
Hello again. I mentioned in another thread a couple of days ago that we adopted a 6 year old male from a shelter. He is still recovering from a cryptorchid neuter, and is on antibiotics for that. We saw the vet 2 or 3 days ago because his neuter incision was leaking, and the vet found his temp. was a 103.5. So he gave him a shot of antibiotics and some to take home. He is taking Lincocin 500mg (1 1/2 2x day) to fight off infection.
Well, the day before the vet visit we noticed he was panting every once in a while, but seemed okay. No problems breathing. Then he had an occasional little dry cough, but the day we went to the vet and the day after, it disappeared. I didn't even mention it to the vet because it was mild and then it was gone. I figured that if he had picked up anything that the antibiotics he was already taking probably cleared it up. The vet did an exam and listened to heart and lungs and never said anything about abnormal findings.
Well, yesterday I was gone to late afternoon and came home to find him with a very deep, dry, and growling cough. My living room floor was splattered with various wads of clear and sometimes white foamy mucous.
The cough sounds horrible, I mean, really bad. But he still wags his tail, walks around to greet me, has bright, clear eyes, no discharge from nose or eyes, pink guns that return to normal coloar quickly after blanching. He still eats and drinks normally and seems happy.
My initial thought was kennel cough. He came from a pound, and I don't know his history, but that seemed likely. He was tested there for heartworms and tested negative.
However, I wonder because of the nature of the cough. It sounds so loud, very deep, and horrible. It doesn't gurgle or sound light and wheezy. He gags also and white foam comes out. I worry now about heart problems. But he isn't wheezing, struggling for air, or even panting anymore between coughs. His gums are pink. No bloated belly. But he is at least 6 years old, and I know boxers are prone to heart problems. No weakness, dizziness, etc.
Last night he went almost all night without coughing, but at 3:00 AM started up and didn't stop until around 4:30. He has coughed on and off this morning, and white foam and sometimes clear mucous comes out.
He isn't exactly a bundle of energy right now but he is still recovering from a neuter, and getting to know my family, so I don't expect him to be bouncing around yet anyway.
I will take him to the vet when I can get in, of course. Just wondering if anyone can shed some light on this.
