Debridement surgery

Tyson looks he is going to have to get debridement surgery as well as his inner eyelid stitched since his corneal ulcer will not go away in his right eye.

It has been about a month and a half of antibiotic drops and so on. I'm so frustrated, has anyone had this done, and if so, how was the success rate after surgery? I don't want to get it done but I feel so bad, he looks cross eyed half the time and his eye is usually rolled up in his head due to the pain.

Ulcers really can be frustrating, horrible to see your boxer in pain too group

Yes, we've been through this too with our first boxer boy. He's ulcers never healed without being debrided first & being treated with eye drops after. For the first ulcer we went through the whole debridement & stitching operation which was a success, subsequent ulcers over the years were only debrided whilst he was conscious with a local anesthetic (he had a heart murmur so repeated anesthetics were avoided).

To be honest it's not a pleasant thing to deal with, dog looks sooo miserable, eye looks horrible BUT it should work, and really when they've had the ulcer for such a long time you have to give it a go.

Are you getting a grid keratotomy? Darwin had this done on both eyes almost a year ago. The hardest part was administering the 3 different eyedrops after surgery. But Darwin tolerated the e-collar well. We took it off when he ate. As to your question we were told the surgery had a very high success rate and that the problem shouldn't recur. The eyelid suturing is done to help protect the eye during healing. It is best to have this done as corneal ulcers are very painful. Best of luck.

Debridement

No, he is not getting the grid keratotomy onle the debridement and third eyelid flap. It looks like next week is it, a little nervous but hopefully once the summer rolls in he'll be 100%.

Question

Tyson had his surgery and got his stitches out two days ago. The eye looks very red and today when I looked at it, I could still see the hazy (scratch) that was in his eye. Is this normal? The doctor mentioned that after a few days something would peel back, I guess after blinking a lot it would come out. Any idea about recovery from debridement surgery would be appreciated.

Finally healed

Debridement surgery with diamond burr worked. Tyson is on the road to recovery, about $2000.00 later. Very happy.
