I used to use the wire corded tie outs for katie when we lived in the apartments, and have been "branded" by these a few times. I have never really investigated the retractable leashes, and to be honest i didnt realize they had weight restrictions on them. I use a double handle leash with her harness. it is a 6ft nylon with a loop at the end and a loop by the clasp. this i have found works really good i can let her range a little ahead of me or i can keep her right next to me. It has come in handy when going to the petstores or walking by people. now that we have a little yard for her to run in, i only use the leash when we go out or are at grandma's. so that extra control is needed.

My husband had Boo on the retractable leash. I was wearing shorts when she ran behind me and gave me a nice 4 inch cord burn behind my knee that oozed for a couple of weeks. I couldn't wear pants for 2 weeks. Those things are really dangerous to your body parts if the dogs decide to end run you and your not paying attention.

I do not use a flei leash. But if I wanted to i would hate to think that I couldn't becase of someones irresponsible use of one. It's just like anything else a car, a circular saw or anthing else you can find danger in almost anything. Some people are just sue happy if they get hurt their fault or not they will find blame in someone else. That is a big problem here and some people need to take resposibility for their own actions.

I use a retractable when I walk my babies. I walk them seperately because I do let them run. Of course it is mainly in circles. We live in apartments and it helps them release some of the energy when I can not get to the park. However, when I am out (Petsmart, park, etc.) I use the regular leash for better control if necessary.

I like many, read the instructions and just by looking at it you can tell that it can do serious damage if used improperly, it is the risk you assume when you utilize the device.

I got injured very badly by one of those "cord" retractable leashes ( thankfully not so bad as the poor woman in the story) Anyhow, we only buy the retractable leashes that are actually nylon LEASHES, no different from regular leashes. They are twice as expensive but worth every penny
