Dangerous Dogs Act - UK

Hi,

For any of you in the UK I'm sure you've heard about the 5 month old baby in Leicester that has just been killed by 2 rottweilers. :(

I've probably heard about it more seeing as it was a 5 minute drive from my house.

Anyway, there's talk about them revising the dangerous dogs act to ban all 'dangerous' dogs. I think boxers may fall in this category....

Has anyone got any information? What would happen to all the poor boxers in the UK?

Wish I could help. I do know that in my state (Virginia) they passed a dangerous dog act that basically doesn't list any specific dog but holds the owner of a dog responsible for any attack that happens. This is a better way of approaching the situation as the owner is at fault pretty much 100% of the time, not the dog.

I know in Canada boxers aren't classified as dangerous dogs I am sure you can find out on the internet call an insurance company. My friend couldn't get house insurance from some insurance companies because she owns a german sheppard.

Its very sad news but I cant see them banning certain dogs. From what it says the dog owner was on holiday and they were watching the house and the dogs so really, at the time she was the owner. There could be many reasons as to why these dogs attacked but why leave a 5month old alone with 2 rottie 'gaurd dogs'?

Here's hoping nothing gets done to Boxers though.

there was a similar incident that happened here where I live. They didnt revise the banned dog list as it was the parents fault for not supervising the child.

This is the list in Spain.

Spanish association for protection of animals and other public organizations of the country approved of making a list of dangerous dog breeds. The list has been compiled by the Spanish government.
There are eight dog breeds on the list: pit bull, rottweiler, stafford bull terrier and American stafford bull terrier, Argentinean dog, Brazilian fila, tosa inu and akita inu. In the future dogs with the weight of over 20 kg, chest of over 60 cm, well-developed muscular system, strong jaws and aggressive temper may be also included in the list.
Moreover, the Spanish government decreed, people under 18 could not be owners of dogs. A special license is to be received to own a dog. Special testing similar to that one held for getting licenses to wear guns is to be also undergone to get a license to own a dog. Insurance payment at the rate of 120,000 euro is also obligatory at that. The dog breeds mentioned on the list should be taken for a walk in muzzles and short dog’s lead.

Weight over 20kg - tick
Chest over 60cm - tick
Well-developed muscular system - tick
Strong jaws - tick.
Aggressive temper - I don´t think so !!!!!!!!!

How does this differ to other countries?????

Please tell me you mean insurance cover of €120,000 and not a premium of €120,000 :o

Any dog can be dangerous so what are they going to do ban every dog :(

As for revising the DDA. Not sure if there will be any changes. Here is a quote from Patricia Hewitt, Health Secretary and Leicester West MP

"Unless we're going to take the step of saying that a family with a child isn't allowed to own a dog, it seems to me the law is unlikely to be able to rule out every possible tragedy of this kind"

My city is right in the middle of this situation too! Our city council tried to pass an ordinance that made a list of several breeds and named them as 'viscious dogs'. To be included: boxers, germ. sheps,rotties, pits, husky,doberman, danes, all the staffordshire's, some others. It was rediculous! All because some pitbulls had created problems. Well enough people found out about the meeting and appeared there with their input and the city backed down a little. They did ban pits while grandfathering in the ones we have already, under certain conditions. But they formed a committee of citizens (my husband and I included) to meet and discuss further possibilities with the city attorney who will then draft a new proposal to present the council for approval. We're trying to make them address the OWNERS more and enforcement rather then breed specific laws. They opened a while can of worms!

Why would you imagine that boxers would fall into a dangerous dogs category? There are only 4 types of dogs banned in the UK (for the past 15 years or so) and all of them are fighting types that aren't/weren't present in the UK in any significant numbers anyway. In short, that particular piece of legislation is about keeping them out - not removing/banning/restricting what is already here.

"Talk" about revising the Act is nothing more than reaction/hysteria. And it's not coming from anyone in a position to do so either.

The rest of the Act - that is, the relevant part - is about control of individual animals, and the responsibilities of the owner. That already applies to all breeds
