D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) Collar?

Anyone ever used a D.A.P. (Dog Appeasing Pheromone) Collar for Separation Anxiety? I have always disregarded these types of items...being a bit of a cynic I figured there is no way a collar can help or solve a behavioral issue. However we have a dog at the rescue that has been returned twice for sever separation anxiety. One of our volunteers put one of these collars on him and he is actually a lot calmer. Is this a fluke? I looked at amazon and the reviews are pretty favorable too. Anyone here have personal experience?

i have herd about the ones u plug in. like a air freshener. seams they work by giving off the calming sent of the mother dog. makes sense to me. so i recommended one to my sister ( her pitty was digging holes in his toes & he ended up with a infection, because of SA. he is doing great now ( 2 weeks ) & his toes are healing nicely. I did lone them sams snow boots wich helped !!! : )

so even though i have not used them , if needed i would give it a shot !!!!! I also like the idea of a collar better then the plug in.

I have experience with a D.A.P. plug-in and didn't notice a difference in my dogs. I think I got a faulty D.A.P. because the oily pheromone substance leaked and it made one heck of a mess on my kitchen counter.

Same here, it leaked and it did not make a difference at all. Total waste of money for us. I wonder if part of the reason it sometimes works is because we *think* it works and are calmer when leaving the house or more relaxed and the dog feels automatically more at ease.

Yep, same here. I bought one in an attempt to keep the dogs calm and quiet after being neutered and wish I had of saved my money.

From what I have heard it works with some dogs and not others. If it works, great.

It is funny you asked, I tried this type of collar this weekend from a different brand and it seemed to have an effect. I was also a skeptic. However, the packaging was pretty explicit in that it is proven. When I opened the pack, both Layla and Jack clearly took notice and were calmer.

I was trying it to help Layla keep calm prior to agility trial. LOL, it wasn't enough. However, I must say when she decided to leave the ring on her own, she did so calmly and deliberately. So much so nobody noticed a loose boxer trotting past dogs and people.

I used the plug ins when Lucy was having SA and peeing in her crate. What I observed is that Lucy was somewhat more settled and only peed in her crate half the time instead of all the time. However it had more of an effect on my little Boston, Henry. He is a very nervous dog, always licking his paws and having the DAP seemed to really calm him and the paw licking became virtually non existant. I would say give it a shot..it can't hurt.
