I was wondering if anyone knows whether Cushing's Disease is a hereditary illness. We just lost our little girl Shannon age 6 years due to this disease. We have one of her offspring and are worried about the possibility that he could be geneticly predisposed to the illness.

Hey,

I see no one has replied to you at all and its been a while but I didn't want you to not get an answer and the answer is...they don't know how it is inherited all studies are inconclusive or negative...here is a site with some good information....

http://www.upei.ca/~cidd/Diseases/endocrine diseases/hyperadrenocorticism.htm

for people who don't know cushing's..
"Cushing's disease results from an overproduction of the hormone cortisol. Cortisol is produced by the adrenal glands (located next to the kidneys) and stimulated to produce cortisol by the pituitary gland (at the base of the brain). Disease may be due to overproduction in the adrenal glands by themselves or overstimulation of the adrenal glands by the pituitary gland."

Cushing's/Heredity

I lost my 11 year old boxer in March, Darby, to Cushings. I could never find out if it was genetic, but I did read that certain breeds, boxers included, are more likely to develop the disease than others. Also read that if your girl is spayed, they will have a slightly greater risk in the boxer breed. I have a four year old now, and I will be much more diligent in looking for signs as she ages. I am so sorry about your loss - I am sure your young puppy will grow old and gray.
