Crustie owie on tip of ear

We just went through this and had a biopsy done. The lab results came back "Vasculitis".
We had a lot of extenuating circumstances........brought home a foster puppy from the shelter with ringworm. She had 6 lesions, 5 of them pink, hairless, the size of a dime. But she also had one black scabby spot on one ear. She was treated with topical med and medicated shampoo and has gone on to her forever home.
Shortly after she left, Mack got very sick with a high temp (105*) and a large swelling on one side of his neck. The emergency vet suspected an infected and/or impacted salivary gland.
Mack was on Clavamox, continued to run low to med temps and felt bad. He was lethargic and had to be coaxed to eat.
It took about two weeks and he finally felt better when he broke out with a scab on the inside of one ear tip...it got worse and appeared on the outside as well. Then he got a smaller one on the OTHER ear tip.
I could find nothing that said ringworm looked like that....but DID find a lot of references to sarcoptic mange - with lesions on the ear tips being very symptomatic. I was convinced that was what we were dealing with......The vet said it would have been very itchy if it was sacoptic mange (and the ears were not itchy, but very painful).
As I said, the diagnosis was vasculitis.....but that is more of a symptom of something else going on. He's fine now, with no reoccurence of the lesions.

My situation sounds just like the second reply. They shake and then there's blood on our white couches and clothes. And I can't get it too heal. My second dog just started showing signs of it. So, do I find Bacitracin at my vets? or somewhere else? Thank you for all your input. I will get on top of this. It doesn't seem to bother them, but it's taking little chunks out of their ears. Took our 17 month old female to the vet for the same issue yesterday. Because of the head shaking and playing with other dogs, this area keeps getting retraumatized and can't heal. He told us to cover the area with superglue to give it time to form a granulation base and get us over the initial healing hump. Antibiotic ointment may help with healing, but it is not doing any good if the wound keeps being reopened.
If this doesn't work, he suggested a headband of pantyhose material to keep the ears against the head with a collar to keep her from scratching it off until the ear begins to heal.

I am so glad to see this thread. My boxer has had this on and off again for about 2 years. The vet recently diagnosed it as "vasculitis". Same thing... black crusty, scabby spots on the tips of both of his hears (one is always worse than the other). He shakes his head ALL the time so they are constantly bleeding and then re-scabbing. There is blood spattered all over our walls from this! Our vet actually told us NOT to use Polysporin or Neosporin- something about it being dangerous to use an oil based product near the ears. Not likely that the product would get IN the ears, but just in case. What she told us to buy was a Zinc cream. When I looked for it in the Health Food store I found that most zinc creams are in the form of acne cream or diaper rash cream. But, I did end up finding a pure zinc cream. She also suggested using aloe. But, these have not really helped that much. I guess I might try the Bacitracin?
