My husband and I are buying a boxer and he wants the ears cropped because he likes the way it looks I think it's cruel to put the dog, especially a puppy through that. Any thoughts - do the dogs really suffer alot - or am I over-reacting?

both my dogs have cropped ears. i don't believe its particularly cruel, as it is much less envasive than a spay or neuter. Both mine we're normal after their surgeries by the time they came home (same day).. though it was hard to make sure the pups didn't scratch at their sutures.. Depending on how long the crops are, it can be a lot of work posting and re-posting the ears. Our dogs were racked until 8.5mos (about 6mos), but they did have longer show-crops.. a shorter crop, w/ more bell will stand more quickly. Ultimately, its up to you, but you should take into consideration all the time spent racking ears (about once a week it needs to be changed). If you do decide to crop, find a reputable/talented earcrop vet (most wont do it because they don't have the necessary skills)... The best place to find one is a referral from your local boxer club, or all-breed club. The worse thing you can do if you do decide to crop is going to an inexperienced vet, who does a horribly short "pitbull" cut. Good luck w/ whatever you decide. ;)

I think boxers look great cropped or uncropped. Cassius has natural ears, I love them floppy! We did end up taping his "natural" ears, just to get them to lay correctly (especially during teething). Either way I'm sure your baby will be a cutie pie :) Good luck with your decision.

If you look in my profile you'll see that my Siren girl has what would be considered a pet crop - not a show crop. I like how they look - I think it makes her look very alert. I love how floppy ears look too though. I didn't really want her ears done, but my husband was insistent on it. Siren had a rack for a couple of weeks, and a couple of weeks more she would let one fall halfway, but it was just laziness. We'd rack her for a week or so the couple of times she let the one fall....and they have been erect for probably 8 months now. It is one of those things that if you don't do it - you can't do it. Make the choice you're comfortable with - the recovery isn't hard on the pup. My Siren was her old obnoxious self that same day!

I don't think that it's cruel to the dog. Our dog had his done about a month ago and he's doing fine. Just be prepared for all the after work. I think there's a picture of Phoenix the day after his surgery in my gallery. He was back to his normal hyper self.

I don't think it is cruel but it is a matter of what you like my boxers are not cropped I like the soft floppy ears and to me they look sweeter with the floppy ears so it is just a matter taste

I have spoke with my vet and various other people on cropping a dogs ears. What I have learned is that with anistisia and a young puppy that there is no lasting pain and in most cases no pain once the surgey is done. This also goes for docking the tails. I do urge you to use a very good vet that is familliar with the process and not be conncerned with cost. Alot of groups out there would have us believe that alterring our dogs is a horible thing, but if they were allowed to run things, think of the dogs that would die or have very pain filled lives due to not being able to opperate on defects or alter them for a purpose. Us humans have surgeries done to enhance our looks and performance. Our pets deserve the same oppertunities that we have! I am firm in my beliefs and have researched them extencivly but urge you to do the same. Talk to yuor vet along with other vets around you. Cropping is a choice that should be taken seriously and with a pupose. Good luck with your spouse and puppy. We'll be looking forward to hearing about your decision in the future.
