Cropped ears are more healthy??

I talked to 2 vets about ear cropping and they both told me that cropping ears to prevent ear infections is a false reason to do the cropping. They both said that dogs, just like humanes, some will be prone to ear problems and some wont, that is has nothing to do with the cropping of the ear.

Nikki (natural ears) has had several ear infections over the years. The vet told me it is bacause they flap, and gave the same reasons that you over heard, "bacteria, moisture, infection, ear mites". Bacically that the ear does not stay as dry when they flap.

Both of my boxers have floppy ears. I do like the cropped look however just did not have the heart to have it done and love her floppy ears and all. But since we are on the discussion...mine is very prone to ear infections and I too always believed it was because her ears were floppy. I no sooner get rid of one and she gets another one :mad: I just can't figure it out. I clean her ears out constantly, use oti-cleanse atleast twice a week too and have a lifetime supply of otimax and tresiderm. What gives? Anyone else have this problem with their boxer? Just glad to know now that it isn't because her ears aren't cropped!

Thanks Cindy! That's what I thought and it sounds totally reasonable. It this were true, there would be high ear infection problems with cockers, basset hounds, labs ...

What bothered me was that someone who is showing boxers was telling the public this. Presumably he would be more knowledgeable of the breed. I suppose he heard it from someone else and probably believes it.

Well, my kids are cropped and I've only had one who developed an ear infection. I certainly believe that as long as the owner is doing their part as far as cleaning the ears regularly that there should not be a higher rate of infections in the natural earred boxers. Quite a few of the natural earred rescues I've had come through have arrived with ear infections, which i attribute more to lack of care than to anything else.

That being said, cockers and bassets *do* have a high rate of ear problems.

I decided against cropping Roxannes ears. My vet was very glad to hear that, he said it was unnecessary. Her floppy ears have so much expression!! I had a beagle who was prone to ear infections. Had to put her under anesthesia to clean them but the vet told me her ear canal was deformed which caused the bacteria to grow.

Cindy, I totally agree, cleaning really plays a large part in it. Im not saying that you should or should not crop, just saying that doing it for health reasons in MHO is not the reason. By the way....... are you freezing up North yet???? Is it dark all the time now??

Well actually I think we have about an inch of ice on the ground and *no* snow here in Anchorage! LOL And we're down to about 5 hours of daylight each day, but we'll start gaining again in another week...winter solstice. :)

That cracks me up. They always say that about circumcision also....:)
I think the ear cropping is awful(just my opinion) I love to watch Ethel's ears flop or go flat when she is interested in something. We call it the "flying nun"look.
I'm not being sacrilegious, there was a program with Sally Fields called the flying nun..... I love to rub her soft ear while we are watching TV or when I am sad and crying on her. I can't imagine her without her ears down....
