Crazed At Times!

[Trammell]

Okay, so I realize I just introduced myself to Boxerworld a few minutes ago, but I gotta have some feedback on my 3 month old boxer boy, Trammell, and his bad habit of acting crazily when others pick him up. A few friends of mine and some teenagers I work with have attempted to pick him up and its during these times he goes into some sort of demon possessed mode. His head starts jerking wildly and he growls and starts biting their hands (not hard enough to leave marks). I should also note that he is very bitey when others put their hands out to pet him.

In addition, Trammell almost always leads with his mouth during meetings with others. He is a friendly pup (wags his tail at everyone), but he wants so badly to bite on everyone. He is very vocal as well, lots of growling, not of the vicious sort.

Any replies on this matter would be helpful. Thanks.

Trammell sounds like a typical boxer puppy. They need to be taught not to bite. If you do a search on biting, you will find lots and lots of posts on the topic. Also, please check the puppy pages. The link is below.

I would suggest letting them pet the dog while your holding him. Its important that your dog knows its okay. You could try comforting the dog when this happens.

Dogs do NOT like to be confined. Picking up a dog and holding it, even a pup, is confinement to the dog and he will fight to get loose.

Don't pick up your dog unless absolutely necessary. And you should NEVER let anyone else (other than at your vet's office, etc.) pick up your dog.

As for biting, the search engine will guide you to properly handle this very common puppy issue.

Does your dog like peanut butter? Maybe you want to try putting some peanut butter on your hand so that when you reach out to him, he licks you instead of trying to bite you. Or butter apparently works good too.

Do the search on biting. Mine was doing that all the time too as a puppy. The mouthiest dog I have ever had. It is important to get him to stop.
A puppy kindergarden class might help also. Trainers have some great ideas. Good luck and don't get too frustrated. I've been there too. Just look at Toby's face and you can tell he can be a stinker.

Thank you everyone for the helpful advice. As suggested by one of our friendly moderators, I'm going to stop letting others pick up Trammell. I guess when they are puppies everyone has an inclination to want to scoop 'em up, including myself. Oh, by the way, Trammell is slated to begin puppy kindergarten at the end of July. I'm hoping it will get him going in the right direction.
