crating...?

I know there are posts about it, but didn't know if this was asked specifically... Is it bad to let your pup's crate be next to your bed at night.. we had heard that it wasn't the best idea. just wanted to know. Austin has been with us about a week now and he is slowly howling for less and less time each night. so i hope he will be better soon, also just wondering about how long the crying and whining will go on at night and during the days... thanks!

I also heard that is wasn't the best idea to have the crate in your bedroom, however sometimes you have to do what you have to do. We've had our Molly for 2 1/2 weeks now and she finally stoped howling at night. How we moved her into our room out of a crate and into a dog bed. The past few nights have been wonderful. She wakes us up generally around 3:00 by whining and we put her out and back to bed. Before that in the crate she would mess herself constantly, she ended up pulling or breaking all her bottom baby teeth chewing on the crate.
We tried everything in the crate, hot water bottle, ticking alarm clock, shirts with our scents on it, filled kongs, toys treats and nothing would stop her. She still won't go downstairs because she knows the crate is still there. We have found she is getting a better sleep and so are we.
So you can try putting the crate in your bedroom maybe just being close to you will give your puppy a little sense of security.

We kept Daisy in her crate for the first few weeks, after that, she took her place between my wife and I in our bed. Now the only time she goes into her crate is when we are at work or there is no one to stay with her while we are out. 90% of the time she goes everywhere we go. If she can't go, we just tell her to go to her house and in her crate she goes.

Not to say it isn't true, but I've never heard this. In fact, I have read conflicting information that putting the crate in the bedroom, even near your bed, can help calm your puppy at night.

We crated Lael in our bedroom, with hopes to let her sleep un-crated in our bedroom as she got older. She's been sleeping on her bed at the foot of our bed since about 6 months of age, and she's very good about it. We've never had any behavioral problems as a result.

We started crating Chloe at night when she arrived at 9 weeks of age... Mark got a set of ear plugs and I took a week of work. The more tired she was; the faster she stopped crying. I think it lasted about 5 to 7 days...

I started crating her during the day (different crate - in the kitchen) at 9.5 weeks. First for short periods of time (5 - 10 min.); then up to 2 hours in a weeks time. I would go stand outside the window - and found that she settled pretty quickly (weight of my heart). She only cried for 3-5 minutes... and that stopped within a week....

She's 16 weeks now; no longer crated at night - and no problems during the day; she walks up to the crate when we say "kennel time". She also in never in longer than 3.5 hours....
