crating your dog

Like I stated earlier I have crated Baxter for 9 hours at a time. He is crated usually 1 day a week but no more than 3 days a week. Days he is crated when I return home we take a 2hr walk/run. He is not crated in the evening either(he sleeps in my bed). Since I got Baxter when he was 9-10 weeks old he has never chewed one item in my house but he did have frequent urinating accidents. I would crate him because he never urinated in his crate but would not have a problem "doing it" on my carpet. Now that Baxter is over one year old he no longer has these accidents. I have been leaving him out of his crate for periods of 5-6hours at a time and he has been wonderful(accident free). I still don't think I would leave him out of the crate for 9 hours. So in short I believe if you have to crate or tie your dog everyday all day due to work etc... you shouldn't have bought the dog but if it is infrequent crating I don't have a problem with it.

We all have different thoughts and ideas. I personally don't have a problem crating during the day. The dogs are used to it, have room to move and are much safer than runner freely about my house. I do let my dogs out for a lunch break and they are very well trained, wonderful dogs. Both Bru and Amaya would qualify for CGC titles and we spent at least 8 hours a day playing with them. Bru will be trainly for agility soon and we are planning to train Amaya in advanced obedience. They don't sound deprived to me??

I crate trained Forrest when I first got him. We live in a 1 bedroom flat, so I took him out as often as I could. He was house trained in about a week and a half, he knows to go outside and it's just if I take him out before it's too late. He was crated for up to 4 hours during the day and also crated the entire night till he was a little older than 5 months. After that I let him free an hour at a time while I was away. Leaving nothing around of course. He never got to anything that he shouldn't have and now at 9 months, he's completely free at home when I'm gone.
My question is, even though he behaves nicely when left alone, should I still crate him sometimes to get him used to the crate? He hasn't been crated for almost 4 months now. Will he start tearing up the house once he gets older?
Since space is at a premium in this tiny flat, I would like to store the crate if I didn't need it anymore.
Does anyone have suggestions?

It may be an idea to put him in the crate occassionally just in case he needs to go in one at the vets or similar. As far as tearing up the house goes, if he has been good so far it will probably stay that way :)

Weekends seem harder, and when we leave the house for 2 hours it appears to really upset him.

Is your routine a bit different on the weekend? Here are a couple of articles on seperation anxiety:

It is hard to tell when they will be okay to have a free run. All ours have been different. Here is a previous thread on this question which may help:

we're crate training Harry

We've been crating Harry since we brought him home 9 days ago. He doesn't seem to mind it at all.
I was home with him last week but today have had to go back to work. :(
We've hired a dog walker to come into our house 3 times during the day. Once around 10:30, again around 1:00, and then at 3:00 or so. We leave for work at 7:30 and I will get home at 5:00.
My husband gets up at 5:00 to play with him, feed him etc so he gets lots of time with us in the morning, and then of course, we'll be with him all evening until we go to bed around 10:00 or 11:00.
We're keeping our fingers crossed that everything will go well today. He seems to sleep most of the day so I'm hoping it won't be too hard on him.
