The crate is too big. He only needs about half of the crate right now, so block off the back half of the crate, he will feel more secure with a small spot. Remember he just left all of his brothers and sisters and has no one to dog pile with. Keep him by the bed for now and when he cries put your hand down there to let him know you are still there. You are now the mom and he just wants to know you are there and when he learns a routine he will be better. Dont give up, crate training is very important for your baby!! and it is not cruel. Dont be too hard on yourself.

I am sure there are lots of suggestion out there.

Good Luck

No it's not being cruel.
Have you tried moving the crate close to your bed so puppy knows you are there and can smell you??
You might also want to put a scented (your scent) t-shirt in with puppy at night so he is not so stressed about being in there alone.
I've also heard of putting warm cuddly objects in the crate (or a warm towel) and even a wrapped up clock that ticks (supposed to remind them of a heartbeat). The clock thing never worked for Harley but hey it might be worth a shot.
Your puppy is much better off in his/her crate where you know where they are at all times throughout the night.
If Harley woke crying in the middle of the night we would let him out for a potty break, then immediately back to his crate for sleep.
Your pup will get used to it, trust me.

I also used the clock with Angel. That's a great trick. Angel was the worst to crate train. It seemed like she screamed for days every time she went in. It lasted about 5 or so days and then she got used to the idea. We used to put a toy in there for her to play with at night too. Hang in there it will get better and it is the safest place for your baby.

When we got Cooper, we first blocked off half of his crate so #1. he felt more secure and #2, so he wouldn't have room to potty in there and not lay in it. We brought him home when he was only 5 weeks old. He cried his little heart out. I felt so bad, and I got up every two hours for a potty break for about two weeks. I felt exhausted... But, after about 6 nights of crying he finally stoped, and now at 10 weeks, he sleeps in there all night without complaining at all. It is nor cruel at all, he will get used to it, and you will be glad you did it. Cooper has never went potty in his crate in the 5 weeks we have had him. It is so nice to have a safe place for him to be when we are away. Good Luck!!!

Did you actually do any crate training and conditioning first, or did you just plonk him it in and shut the door?
