We are currently using a small crate for our boxer pup. It was originally used for a miniature schauzer. We now want to buy a new crate that he could grow into; something suitable for an adult male boxer. What size do you recommend? If you can specify the approximate or exact dimensions it would be helpful. I'm tempted to say "large" but that may be for an extrememly large dog. I understand that my male boxer might get to be about 60 pounds. Actually, he may be slightly under this as he was the runt of the litter. We don't have much space so I don't want to get one that is too big. What are your recommendations?
Thanks in advance!

Well, my male is 67 lbs and he had a "large" crate. Sorry, I don't crate him anymore so I don't have the exact dimensions. Anyway, the large crate was pretty big for him so I think you could definitely get a size smaller "medium" I guess.

Hope this helps.

Just curious -- why do you think he'll be about 60 pounds? Are his parents on the small size? Many boxers can get much larger than that -- especially males. Also be aware that the "runt" doesn't always end up being smaller than the others in the litter once they grow up. I don't have exact dimensions, but I think for most brands, a "large" crate is probably the right size. Usually they make an extra large for the really large breeds. A medium might be small for a boxer, but it would depend on the exact dimensions and the size of your boxer when he is fully grown. I think there was poll on crate size a while back -- you might be able to find that with a search and you'll see what others are using.

I've always been told to find a crate that is big enough for the dog to stand up and turn around when he is full-grown.

I think the crates I have are either 24" or 26" height. They are wire crates that fold down.

Hope this helps.

 Good for you.....using a crate can be a godsend not only for you but for your baby as well.....this shouldn't be a punishment but a safety zone. A crate can become his "safe house" when you have company and he is tired of play (when this happens for a Boxer I'm not sure) or if frightened he will curl up in his bed and feel good while the rest of the world goes crazy. I have always used a crate, first to house train a puppy, and a safe haven when guests arrive. As a young (and elderly) adult they have free access to the crate to sleep, hide treasures, or just peak out at the world from a quiet place. A large crate should be just fine.
This will give him room to stretch , stand, sit, or do what ever strikes the Boxer fancy in comfort.:o It should remain a safe place, never where he must go as a punishment. Dole out the "bad dog" and shame on you's first. Give him a cookie and settle him into the crate(bed) to think about it. This will help him to ponder his indiscretion in quiet safety. smashicon

Good luck with your baby, you are in for a real treat.....if this is your first Boxer......be prepared for ........ anything!!!! lovicon

I have a Large for Brutus and Amaya. Bru is 75 lbs and Amaya is 55. We also use an intermediate which Amaya uses if we have a larger foster dog that needs a bigger crate. They both seem fine.

My Snoop has a extra large one. Our friends have a boxer and that is the size they have so that is what we got Snooper. It is quite big and takes up alot of room in my bedroom but i know he feels comfy and safe in it. It's his little home!!!

We have a giant crate for Scout (he's 79 pounds) that's been handed down to his sister Lexi now that he roams free. She's only about 50 pounds, but I love the size of it and knowing she has room to rattle around in there with her toys. She loves that crate, too, because it used to be Scout's. It's so big, I can actually get in it and sit comfortably (I'm 5'8"!).

Anyway, better a bit big than too small. And since they're so expensive (especially the foldable wire ones) you want to err on the larger size so you're not spending more money than you have to!

The one I have is 36" L, 25" W, 29" H. It is a "Large " and states it is for dogs up to 70 lbs. Even if you get a cage that is too big you can always put cardboard, or something else, in it to make it smaller so your dog Doesn't soil in it. Like the others said, crates are expensive. I made the mistake of not getting a big one that would last Kenzie forevever. I bought a medium size crate and now it's too small and had to get a larger one. I'd recommend getting a bigger one than you need when they are little and you can always figure out a way to reduce the size until your pup is older. Plus, you never know if you will be geting other dogs in the future and how big they will be. Also, if you travel, they make crates that slant at the door opening making it capable, for instance in a van. I ahve one like that and it's just great.
