Hi! I have a 15 week old boxer pup who we are crate training. It is going very well, but I'm not sure of how long we can leave him. We crate him while we go to work and at night. I have to leave work and come home to let him out. We started him at only 2 hours and have worked up to 4.5hours. Am I on the right track? How long before I can leave him all day (max 8 hours) while we are at work? He is sleeping through the night now which is about 7-8 hours without going out. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks in advance!

I'm sure you'll get various answers on this but my vet said the rule of thumb is 1 hour +1 for every month old the puppy is but to top out at about 8 hours. If using this method you are right on for 4 1/2 hours at 15 weeks. So by using this method a 5 month old pup should be 5 + 1 so no longer than 6 hours, etc.

Good luck!

I agree

I agree with SC's Mom, my Vet told me the same thing. Also, I have read two Boxer specific books and they both reaffirmed it.

Good Luck!

My vet told me that I may want to leave my Isis in her crate for 2 consecutive weeks and only take her out for bathroom breaks since I feed her inside of her crate (I started doing that to make her look at her crate as a place of comfort). Although it was very hard to do, my pup moved from holding it 5-6hrs at a time on a good day to 8hrs without any problem.
