I am getting my new puppy this evening, and I have a question. When crate training, do i leave a small bowl of water and food in the crate with him?

Thanks for any suggestions.

I am sure that there will be many differing opinions about this.. but here's my 2 cents. :p I do not leave food or water in Cassius' crate. I feel that it would only be asking for crate "accidents"... I have read that some BW members even take up their water bowls at a certain time in the evening, so that there is less chance of wetting over-night (which I have not personally tried). One of the purposes of crate training a puppy is to help teach them to hold their pee & bowels for periods of time. If they are allowed access to food & water, eventually it's going to have to come out! Good luck on whatever you decide is best for your new baby... and Congratulations!! Looking forward to stories and pictures from you soon!

mmmmmm...

I dont leave food or water in lylah's crate either..... I found out early on that she likes to flip her bowls over and make great big messes with it... so i just make sure she eats and drinks well before going in.. and that she goes out to potty too.. and that she gets out about every 4 hrs or so to potty eat play etc... and back out to potty again before going back in.... such great advice here at bw.. i love this place

Thank you all! I love this place too. I could spend all day here looking at threads and searching--too bad I have to work!

I always leave water in the crate :) I don't leave food as such, but do give a treat when they go in, and will sometimes give them a stuffed Kong in the crate. Personally I'm not at all comfortable holding back water from dogs, especially pups who can dehydrate quickly.

Here are a couple of previous threads about water in crates:

We felt bad about leaving Willis in his crate w/o water, because what if something happened that we couldn't get home on time? Also, as it is getting warmer outside and we don't have air conditioning (although his crate is in a cool room in our house), I just wouldn't feel good about it. However, that is our personal choice. Willis has an amazing bladder... if he was prone to accidents, I don't think I would provide water if for short periods of time.

So this week, we determinedly figured out how to use the lixit (me figuring out how not to get it to leak, and him how to drink out of it), and Willis loves it! He doesn't drink too much, but it gives me peace of mind if I am going to be a bit longer than anticipated.

I agree with you on the addicitve quality of this site!

crate training

I've had my pup for about 4 weeks now and started him on crate training, (with no food or water) from the start and he had just one accident. I recently felt guilty and decided to attach a water bottle to the crate - and I've had two accidents in the crate in two days! When the water goes in - it's coming out. The water bottle is now a thing of the past.

Good Luck
