Crate training

I have a 9 month old male boxer that still pees his crate. I'm not sure exactly what to do...I've tried letting him out before I put him in there before bed, and that doesn't seem to work. He's always peed it, but he'll go for a week than all of a sudden have a slip up and pee it. It's very frustrating, because I'm really not sure what else I can do to make him stop it at this point, and i'm just scared he'll do it forever....help!

How much room does your pup have to move around in the crate? When I was crate training my Butch he kept peeing in his as well. To add even more frustation to the situation he also managed to pee outside the crate onto the floor. I called a dog trainer and she told me I was giving him too much room to move in the crate. She told me I was giving him waaayy too much room. I bought the crate I did based on the size recommendations listed on the crate. She said he really only needed enough room to stand and turn around in a tight circle. I said that looks so uncomfortable but she pointed out to me that when they sleep they curl in on themselves and if they were in the wild they would find a comfy, close place that would make them feel safe and secure. I tried it by giving Butch just enough room to turn around and lay in a curled position and he has not peed in his crate since. Of course as he grew I added room to his crate space but he still has just enough room to curl up and lay down. His came with a wire grate that I could use to reduce the interior size of his crate. Also, are you putting away his water bowl after the last time he goes out to potty at night?

Yes, I have done that and he still pees in his crate =( He has just enough room to stand up and turn around tightly in the crate, we've even switched crates and bought a new one and he still pees it. He is fully house broken, except for peeing in his cage at night. After I take him out at night he goes straight in his box so there is no chance of him drinking again after pottying. Any more suggestions???

Could he be scared? Maybe if he had one of your shirts to sleep on or a favorite toy he would not pee. Just a thought. I did this for my Bassett. He didn't pee but he would whine and shake when I crated him so I gave him a t-shirt I slept in for a few nights and that seemed to help. I know sometimes dogs pee when they are scared or nervous. Can't hurt to try. Good luck.

How long is he in there before he urinates? He may just simply not be able to hold his bladder as long as you are asking him to. You could also try picking up the water 3-4 hours before bedtime to give him a chance to get it all out of his system. But you may need to get up once in the middle of the night. Does he ever let you know he has to go while he's in there? Do you put bedding in it? If you do I'd recommend taking it out. If the bedding is soaking up the urine then there's less incentive to not go.

At 9 month old your pup has most likely learned that it is okay to pee in his crate. It will take some work and patience to get rid of the habit. At that age he should be able to hold it through the night. Do you clean the crate with a cleaner that gets rid of all of the smell, for example "nature's miracle"? The smell of urin can trigger him to pee, too. And the smell might be in his bedding as well, even if you washed it. I agree that taking out the bedding might help, however I wouldn't want my dog to be without a bed/blanket all night.

To be quite honest, with Boxers and after going through my dog eating his beddingin the middle of the night without me knowing it, I recommend to everyone to only use chew proof beds in crates as you just never know when you're sleeping if your Boxer is shredding/chewing/eating their blankets. Only takes one time before you can end up with a seriously ill (such as in our case) or possibly dead dog. My boy had NEVER chewed or shredded his blanket for over a year until one fateful day and ended up with a 3 hour abdominal surgery, 4 week recovery time, and a $2,500 bill attached to him not to mention a 10 pound weightloss and 3 months to gain that weight back. Just not worth it IMO. They sleep on hard floors, concrete, nothing wrong with a crate pan that's in the house.
