crate trainig while at work

our puppy is almost 10 weeks old and he sleeps with us. he follows us everywhere and is always sitting at our feet or in our laps. we love it and love him so much but when hes in his crate while we are gone hes cries and whines whole time and drools really bad. i dont think its the crate thats the probluem i thinks its being alone. he will go in and out of his crate for treats or toys but when alone in there he goes crazy biting cage and pushing on cage walls. any ideas to help in calm down or be at ease while we are gone at work? oh hes in there from 8-12 and then from 1-3 my wife lets him out at lunch to potty and play.

I don't work outside my home so I am always home with Toby, but he is crate trained, and still sleeps and stays in there when we have to run errands of go out for a while. We've never had any trouble with him being in there, but maybe you should start putting him in the crate at night instead of sleeping with you guys until you can get him used to being in there for long periods of time. We always keep the tv on or radio at night and when we leave just so he feels like someone is there. We also keep good chew toys in there with him, like a kong, and other chew toys that he can't tear and choke on to keep him from being bored while we are gone. He's a year old now and prefers to sleep in his kennel at bedtime instead of with us, . Good luck and I hope you find the answers that will help you guys out

we want him to sleep in crate some but hes so loud we have to let him out. we live in apartments and our neighbors will call on us if hes loud and we cant have that obviously. so thats why he sleeps with us every night. we also keep the radio on at night and during the day while hes alone. he also has a stuffed animal in there with him and a chew toy. we hope that maybe when he gets older he will like but for now hes only 10 weeks and is not liking it .

Try moving the crate into your room at night and when he starts to whine you can reach down and soothe him back to sleep, just letting him know you are close may help too

the crate is in the corner by our bed about 5 feet away. its a 42" crate with pup divider panel in it. thats why its in the corner. we cant reach him from bed but if we get out of bed to calm him it does work for a minute.

I got my puppy when he was 7 weeks old, i too live in the apartment, so i understand it is very difficult especially when puppies cry.
the only thing that is going to help him is time. i took him to my mom's house for a few weeks so she could babysit him while i was at work, she had to move so i couldn't do that any longer. i work 5 days a week also, so what i did when he was little is make the crate cozy and comfy for him so he could easily snuggle in and fall asleep. i would fill a kong full of peanut butter and freeze it, so it lasts longer and give it to him when i would leave. i would leave a radio on, so that he doesn't feel lonely. he did cry alot, but grew out of it pretty quickly because it became a habit to him.
as far as potty is concerned, i also created a schedule for him to potty, he got used to that quick. when i wake up- i took him out. after i fed him, i got ready for work, and in about 30 minutes i let him out again right before i left. he honestly caught on to that quick. there were only a few accidents.

He is doing much better now. Hes basically potty trained now except for if we have alot of rain . His cratehe now likes and has accepted it well. Hes such a smart boy and we enjoy him everyday. Thanks everyone for your help with this

I'm glad you guys came to a melding point with the crate training and potty training. I imagine EVERYONE mustbe resting easier now ... we're possibly about to go through this exact same thing again very soon.

bed sheets

When i have had puppies i have had success going two seperate ways with this.

one is we put the puppy in her crate at night and no matter how much she whined or cried we would ignore it, and she would realize it is useless and give up in a week or so.

second we would let our puppy sleep in bed with us a couple nights, then take the sheets off the bed and put it in her crate. then we would have her sleep in her crate and the smell from our sheets made her much more at ease the first few nights until she was used to sleeping and being in the crate.
