Crate Problems....HELP

My boxer pup Annabell is 4 months old now and is doing pretty well with the house training. But she is not doing so good with the crate training. Any time that she goes in there she pees or poops. If we leave her for a couple of hours or if she just goes in there to lay down. I thought that she would learn that this was her "den" and she would not go in the same spot that she sleeps.

I put towels and stuff in there for her to play with and toys. I just do not know what I am doing wrong. I am having to clean the crate and bath the dog every other day because they are covered in pee and poop......HELP!

Make the size of the crate smaller so she can only turn around in it then as she stops making messes gradually make it bigger.

Well I had thougt of that but we already have a great big crate and can not really afford another one, so I do not have that as a option.

What kind of crate?

You should be able to modify her existing crate smaller. Find a box to put in there with her on one end or something to that extent. What kind of crate is it ?

Crate

Annabell's crate is large cream colored plastic with the push tabs to keep the door closed. And I guess that it must be really tobig for her, she has a whole lot of room in there to play and jump and sleep and everything. I was told in the beginning to get her a great big crate for her to live in.

Unfortunately, you were given misleading information. When housetraining, it's important that that the crate only be big enought for your to stand up, lie down and turn around. Once they are housetrained, it can be as big as you want. As TDave said, just find a box that fits tightly into the crate to block off part of it.

I would also advise not putting towels and other absorbant materials in the crate. This only encourages the dog to pee and it is absorbed by the towels and the dog then isn't bothered by it.

Dan is right, Sarge is almost two years old and he will still use the bath room in his crate if there is anything in it (mat designed for the crate, towel or blanket). If there is a towel in the crate and he does a #2 he will cover it up with the towel and push it to the back corner of his crate. But if there is nothing in the crate he will hold it until we get home to let him out. I thought that maybe he would out grow this, but tried it last month and he had not.
